"?? Decoding Earth's Secrets: Exploring Core Analysis with RCAL and SCAL Techniques ??"
"Cores are a fundamental source of information for the exploration, evaluation, development, and production of any hydrocarbon field. Cores are a unique source of some datatypes such as rock textural parameters or permeability. They can be calculated or estimated based on other data sources and cannot be gained directly from those data. Some others, such as porosity, are calibrated against core analysis results. Cores are direct samples from the reservoir rocks that can be tested, analyzed, and viewed by the researcher. ????
A core analysis project starts from the coring plan, coring, and core preservation, and continues with three main phases including routine, geological, and special core analysis. Some additional stages are also included such as geomechanics or geochemistry. Various experts are involved in a core planning task. They consider all variables including requirement, cost, and risk to decide the different aspects of coring and core analysis. ????
After coring, cores are transferred to the laboratory. Core analysis starts with the core gamma logging and whole core CT scanning. Basic petrophysical parameters using single-phase fluid are measured on the cores in the routine stage. This step also includes core handling and preparation for routine, special, and geological analysis. Geological analysis includes thin section preparation, microscopic and macroscopic studies, and rock typing. ?????
Final data are compared with the wireline logs and distributed to the inter-well space. Dynamic data are provided using multiphase fluid tests in a special section. All data are integrated to reconstruct the rock and fluid distribution within the reservoir. ????
Core Analysis Role in Reservoir Characterization
Reservoir characterization relies on essential data like porosity, permeability, water saturation, and net-to-gross ratio. These vital details are sourced from both direct and indirect measurements. Direct sources encompass core and cutting samples, while indirect methods include wireline logging, well tests, and geophysical surveys. ?????
Drill cuttings, fragments of rocks created by the bit, offer limited information. Unfortunately, porosity and permeability data can't be accurately obtained from cuttings. Complicating matters, there's a significant lag time between drilling and the collection of these samples at the welltop. This lag time introduces potential errors in the analysis. Moreover, there's a risk of detached rock fragments from the well wall mixing with cuttings from different intervals, further complicating the analysis process. ??????
RCAL & SCAL
RCAL stands for "Routine Core Analysis Laboratory," which refers to the basic analysis conducted on core samples taken from oil and gas reservoirs. RCAL provides fundamental data such as porosity, permeability, and fluid saturations. These measurements are crucial for understanding the reservoir's properties and making informed decisions during the exploration and production processes.
SCAL, on the other hand, stands for "Special Core Analysis Laboratory." SCAL involves a more detailed and specialized analysis of core samples. It provides additional insights into the reservoir's behavior under various conditions, including capillary pressure, relative permeability, and other advanced petrophysical properties. SCAL data is particularly important for reservoir simulation and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) projects, where a detailed understanding of the reservoir's complex behavior is necessary for optimal production strategies.
