Do robots have a diversity problem? Mark Paterson, professor of sociology at the University of Pittsburgh, seems to think so. He says it starts at the design stage where choices tend to embody the clinical, clean look typified by shiny white plastic, similar to the ubiquitous tech products we know and love (e.g., the original iPod). Social robots and their cousins, socially assistive robots, are designed to interact with diverse groups. Yet the lack of diversity in their outward appearance may exacerbate societal inequity.
