DECEMBER JOB CREATION SURGES BUT READ BETWEEN THE LINES TO SEE THE TRUE WEAKNESS IN THE NUMBERS
THE GOOD NEWS - The Labor Department reported on Friday that employers added 292,000 new workers in December, well above the 200,000 expected, while October and November were revised higher by 50,000. It was the fifth straight year in which employment grew by at least 2 million.
THE BAD NEWS - Wage gains, however, were muted in December at 0.0 percent. The total unemployment figure (U6) was unchanged at 9.9%. Almost 40% of the job gains came from 16-19 year olds potentially temporary and not big dollar jobs.
