Decluttering Your Workspace

Clutter is something we often encounter in our daily lives, whether it’s our children’s messy rooms or that refrigerator with who-knows-what in all of those plastic containers. But when it is your office or desk that is full of clutter, it can take a toll on your productivity as well as your mental wellbeing. Here are a few tips to help you declutter your workspace.
Paperwork Overload
Make a habit of acting upon paperwork immediately as it appears or is created. Do your best to handle each item just one time by approaching it much like medical triage. First, review it. Second, decide if you need to keep it or can shred/toss it. Third, act upon that decision. Dispense with it immediately if you don’t need it, or put it where it belongs right away if you do: in a physical file folder or digitized and saved on your laptop or in the cloud, after which you can dispose of the physical item. Just be sure you have an efficient digital filing system so you can retrieve it easily in the future. If you currently have piles of paper to attack, you may want to devote a half or full day to get this started. It is worth the time.
The Other Culprits
Now consider everything you don’t want to throw away, like pens, notepads, staplers, or other office supplies. These should be organized to have only the essentials on your desk (with no duplicates). Anything you don’t use every day is a distraction. You can store it out of sight somewhere, such as in a box of office supplies or within an organized drawer. Only keep available the supplies that you really need. (Well, you can keep that framed photo of your partner and/or kids there, too.)?
Schedule decluttering daily?
Take ten minutes at the end of each day to declutter. That way, you’ll start the next day with an organized desk and office, which can inspire you to do great things that move your business forward. It’s not very productive or motivating if you face a mess first thing in the morning. From my perspective, any time you spend just thinking about the clutter around you instead of acting upon it is time wasted.?

By making decluttering part of your standard routine, you can avoid feeling overwhelmed. The process won’t feel like a colossal task; It will become just a natural part of your day. If you focus on decluttering your space as an everyday practice, you can start fresh every morning.
