Declining to vote better than not showing up at all

Declining to vote better than not showing up at all

I usually stay away from overt politics here but I wanted to make this message public. I just got back from declining my vote. I believe this election was called needlessly and no other candidates or leaders offered viable alternates for me.

We have the right to decline to vote in Ontario elections (interesting to me is you do not have that same right in Federal elections).

If you should feel the same as me and didn't vote early, here is just a bit of info on what to do and why declining is better than not voting at all or spoiling your ballot.

Simply, the act of showing up and declining states that you showed up and were prepared to vote but couldn't vote for anyone on the ballot. This is noted as a "decline" and shows up statistically relevant vs. just being part of the category "spoiled" which could have a host of reasons for that. Declining is overt and specifically measurable. Not showing up is not noted anywhere.

So, show up, get found in their voting list, when they give you your ballot, return it and say you are declining to vote. they will mark your ballot as declined. That's it - you can leave.

I put some thoughts around this in this video yesterday.

Hope it helps any others who are conflicted. BTW, this is the first time I ever declined to vote.

A bribe by any other name is still a bribe
