The decline in IBDP Korean A students.
In the final exam in 2024 November, students in the LAL course received an average of 5 grades, while students in the Literature course received an average of 6 grades. If the levels of LAL and Literature students are not significantly different, this difference in grades is a very serious problem.
A few days ago, at the meeting about DP Course with Y11 students, several students informed that they would change to Language B or AB instead of Korean A in their DP course. As such, the number of Korean students who choose Language B or AB instead of Korean A is steadily increasing worldwide.
I want all my Korean students to take my classes. So I want them to graduate by learning creative perspectives, creative interpretations, logical thinking, and compelling writing from me. But the process is not easy.
And students say Language B is easier and get a statistically higher grade. In this current situation, many students have no choice but to choose Language B.
There are three problems here. The first is the exam writers. Many Korean A teachers suspect that the exam writers seems to be using google translation of other Language A questions. And complain that the quality of the translation is very low, because the questions do not convey the meaning clearly.
The second is the problem of examiners. Examiners hate students' different ideas, and they also hate mentioning cameras or lights in images and videos. Even if ambiguous questions are interpreted differently from themselves, points are deducted. Because of this, especially excellent students are leaving Korean A.
The third is the problem of field teachers. The IB respects teachers' individuality and freedom and grants them almost unlimited freedom. Therefore, in the IB, each teacher has an independent curriculum. However, at the same time, the IB also respects teachers' freedom to be lazy. Therefore, if a student is lucky enough to meet a sincere teacher, he/she can learn many things, but if a student meets a lazy teacher, he/she can get worse results than studying alone.
In order for IBDP Korean A to survive, many problems must be solved. And until these problems are resolved, the diastrophism at Korean A will continue for a long time to come.
