Declan's Apprenticeship Story

Like many young people, Declan Brown found himself at a crossroads when he finished school. As he puts it: “I didn’t really have a clue what I wanted to do after my A-Levels… That was until I spotted an advert for a sport-related apprenticeship and since then I haven’t looked back!”

Declan recently completed a Level 3 Community Sport and Health Apprenticeship at the Scampton Church of England Primary School in Lincolnshire, where he’s now secured a job as a teaching assistant.

He works alongside a team of 12 staff, supporting pupils in class and delivering PE lessons.

Declan’s apprenticeship was impacted by coronavirus lockdowns, but he made the best out of the situation by deciding to try something a little different. In fact, you could call him the Joe Wicks of Lincolnshire…

“I setup a virtual live daily workout for school children who were stuck at home. It received great feedback as it helped them to stay active and keep in touch with their friends.”

Declan’s workouts are just one of the reasons he’s celebrating winning two accolades at the recent Lincolnshire Apprenticeship Awards - the Apprentice Champion Award and one for his occupational category.

He’s also been praised for running the Lincolnshire Half Marathon, which saw him raise ￡500 for his school to buy new equipment.

Declan says: “This apprenticeship has completely transformed me as a person. I finally believe in myself, I’ve gained an insight into working in a school, I’ve carved out a career for myself… The list is endless.”

Declan’s parents are particularly proud of him, with his Dad Chris saying: “This is the child who wouldn’t settle at playgroup and the child who took ages settling into primary and secondary school. His confidence was zero and he never believed in himself. Fast forward to this apprenticeship and Declan excels in everything he does."

“Apprenticeships are the way forward in my opinion. Doing one has set Declan up for life… He’s got new found confidence, a career he loves and money in the bank as an added bonus!”
