Decisions, Decisions, Decisions.. UGH

I'm back from a short spring break. My family travelled to a beach destination where we spent the week and had lots of fun.

It was wonderful to take a break and relax.

We enjoyed the sun, sand, and dolphins.

Usually I plan our itinerary to ensure the kids are entertained.

But this vacation was different. I did not have a daily plan.

We spent most mornings on the beach building sand castles, surfing, and swimming.

I loved it.

For me, I was not feeling the decision fatigue.

Decision fatigue is “the idea that after making many decisions, your ability to make more and more decisions over the course of a day becomes worse,”

“The more decisions you have to make, the more fatigue you develop and the more difficult it can become.” - Dr. MacLean.

Our decision-making power source is like our iPhone battery. We start out the day on 100%, but as the day goes on and decisions are made, our mental charge depletes

When the mental charge depletes sooner in the day, your ability of making sound decisions on critical aspects of your life that happen in the day also depletes.

Here is what you can do to monitor and change to reserve your mental power for critical decisions in your day:

Simplify and routinize your daily activities - Many noticed how Steve Jobs had the same wardrobe style everyday. He did that to cut out the decision making step in the morning. This is one that I am working on, I organize the clothes before bed and don't think about it in the morning.

Apply the Rule of 3 to your to-do list - by ?Melissa Camara Wilkins?

Each night, write a list of everything on your mind to accomplish the following day. Then choose the three tasks that are most important and commit to doing them (save the other tasks for another day). Now you have a plan. You work deliberately, not reactively.

Slow down - Look into your calendar and rate your commitment level for each meeting. Then clear your calendar from all that busy work and focus on value adding efforts. You own your calendar and not the other way around!

Reflection question:

What is my top priority for tomorrow that i need to get done? and apply the rule of 3!
