Decisions of a Lifetime. Voting Matters.

Decisions of a Lifetime. Voting Matters.

Recently, a member of my network on Facebook asked the question that regardless of which candidate wins the 2024 presidential race, is there the possibility there could be civil unrest. I thought it was a bold question to ask. And because I still believe civil conversations among FB friends can be had, I weighed in with a response. I will share it here too because, if I've learned during this election cycle, it is some important for us to really speak to one another because these are times, especially for my generation of #BabyBoomers like no other that have taken place in our lifetimes. And so, here in essence, I take this opportunity to have this heartfelt, honest conversation with those in this branch of LinkedIn who take time to engage with me on this platform.

Since my residency part time is in a state where the top state official was the press secretary in POTUS 45's administration, I am absolutely 100% concerned that there may be civil unrest regardless of who wins the presidential race. I personally believe there is faction of folk, however small they may be, who actually would act upon that desire. January 6, 2021, showed us that. But I am holding onto the belief that overall, people of conscience will win because of their sense leaning into "the better angels of our nature" will prevail - Abraham Lincoln.

But let us not forget as ancestor Maya Angelou told us, "When people show you who they are, believe them". To that extent, I am preparing accordingly when it comes to personal safety and well-being in this environment. And that extends to being serious about checking in with and on family and friends often in the coming days and weeks. Physical and mental well-being for us all is of upmost importance as this season is navigated.

But this particular post of mine is not to elicit an attitude or perspective of "doom and gloom". As Madam VP has championed a message of hope, joy and light. in her campaign for this country's highest office, that's what I want to hold on to and be grounded in. And truly, the brightest of lights for me has been seeing the over 150+ affinity groups that have sprung into action and true civic engagement this election cycle. Ever since July 21, I personally have been on several webinars and virtual calls every week. Posts encouraging voter registration and readiness have been seen often on social media. I've been part of an advertising collective made up of some the brightest and most talented of Black strategists and content creators who have created wonderful messaging to get out the vote (GOTV) in the Black community.

The people who have come together this election cycle to have their voices heard has been nothing short of being heartwarming and so encouraging. Just to see people from all walks of life coming together in a shared purpose is perhaps the greatest of hopes we can have for the future of America and all of its people going forward.

Lastly, I ask one favor of everyone who has taken time to read this reflection of mine. I believe I have a very engaged network here on this platform. And I believe the belief in civic engagement is high among you all. So, as the election cycle is navigated, when you go to vote, or if you have voted already, consider leaving me a comment or a symbol that you have exercised that most precious privilege of American citizenship. You have chosen to have your voice heard. You have voted.
