Why I Decided to Pursue a Master’s in Marketing: A Journey of Growth, Exploration, and Connection
Deciding to pursue a master's degree is a significant step in one’s academic and professional journey. For me, this decision was deeply rooted in a long-standing curiosity about global markets and a passion for continuous learning. The pursuit of a master’s in marketing with a focus on international markets is not just an academic endeavor but a strategic move to deepen my understanding of global business dynamics and enhance my professional capabilities.
My interest in marketing began during my undergraduate studies, where I explored various aspects of domestic markets. Over the past three years, I immersed myself in understanding different sectors such as aerospace, automotive, and creative industries. This exposure highlighted the need for a broader perspective—one that encompasses not just national but also international markets. The decision to further my education was influenced by a desire to build on my existing knowledge and to embrace new challenges that come with a global viewpoint.
Expanding Horizons: The Power of Global Perspective
One of the primary motivations behind pursuing this master’s degree is my belief in the transformative power of understanding global markets. In today’s interconnected world, having a comprehensive grasp of international market dynamics is crucial. Globalization has made it essential for businesses to operate across borders and understand the nuances of different cultures, economic conditions, and market trends. I was over involved throughout my undergrad, and I want to take this master's to get involved with different parts of the world as a representative of the university. I would still like to engage with the student community, but I feel serving in previous positions would take the opportunity away from someone else who can grow from the experience as I did.
Studying international markets will provide me with insights into how global economic factors impact local business environments and vice versa. This knowledge is invaluable for crafting marketing strategies that are not only effective but also culturally and contextually relevant. By delving into global market trends, consumer behaviors, and international trade practices, I aim to develop a well-rounded perspective that will enhance my ability to create impactful marketing campaigns.
Understanding global markets also means recognizing the interconnectedness of environmental, socioeconomic, and cultural factors. From the impact of market dynamics on environmental sustainability to the role of cultural differences in consumer behavior, this program will equip me with the tools to analyze and address complex global issues. This broader perspective will enable me to contribute meaningfully to discussions on global challenges and opportunities.
The Titan Experience: Timeless Tusks
My decision to return to Cal State Fullerton for my master’s degree was heavily influenced by the positive experiences I had during my undergraduate studies. Despite the disruption caused by the pandemic, my time at Cal State Fullerton was filled with valuable opportunities and experiences that shaped my academic and professional trajectory.
During my undergraduate years, I built a robust network of friends and professional connections. I was actively involved in various university activities, including participating in sales competitions and serving in the student senate for ASI. These experiences not only enhanced my leadership and teamwork skills but also exposed me to a range of opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Traveling to diverse locations such as Hawaii, Sonoma County, Arizona, and Portland, Oregon, provided me with a broader perspective on different markets and cultures. These trips were instrumental in shaping my understanding of the practical applications of marketing and the potential for growth in various regions. The support and encouragement I received from the faculty and staff at Cal State Fullerton made it clear that returning for my master’s degree was a logical and exciting choice.
The university’s commitment to fostering a collaborative and innovative learning environment aligns with my goals of contributing to its growth and development. The prospect of working with a community of driven individuals who share my passion for impact-driven solutions is an inspiring opportunity that I am eager to embrace.
Challenges and Curiosities: Choosing the Right Path
Selecting the right institution for my master’s degree was a challenging decision. With numerous prestigious programs available, I had to carefully consider which university would best align with my goals and aspirations. Factors such as program specialization, faculty expertise, and opportunities for practical experience played a crucial role in my decision-making process.
Ultimately, the prospect of contributing to the growth of Cal State Fullerton’s business programs and the opportunity to work with a supportive and dynamic community made the decision easier. The university’s emphasis on innovation and its commitment to creating a top-tier business school were compelling reasons for choosing to return.
Additionally, I recognized that pursuing my master’s at Cal State Fullerton would provide me with continuity in my educational journey, allowing me to build on the relationships and experiences I had during my undergraduate years. The strong sense of community and the alignment of the program with my career goals were significant factors in my decision to stay.

The Role of Education in Shaping the Future
As I embark on this new chapter, I view my master’s degree not merely as an academic credential but as a catalyst for growth and opportunity. The program offers a chance to deepen my expertise in international marketing and to engage with a network of students and professionals who are committed to making a positive impact. I learned so much about what the university offers through my work in Associated Students Inc., CSUF as a program specialist and Senator, two roles that showed me the duality of student engagement. Did I want to be Odin, making calls from the throne of Asgard, or Thor on the battlefield fighting for the change? These were questions that went through my head often as I pursued opportunities at the college.
One of my long-term goals is to contribute to the development of Cal State Fullerton’s business programs and to help elevate the university’s reputation on a national and global scale. I am excited about the prospect of collaborating with peers who are driven by a shared vision of creating innovative and impactful solutions.
Beyond my immediate goals, I envision this degree as a steppingstone to further educational pursuits and professional achievements. I am interested in exploring additional disciplines and expanding my knowledge base, and I believe that the foundation provided by this program will be instrumental in achieving those objectives.
Six People Who Diluted the Decision
This is a good thing. There have been several mentors and people who impacted my growth, who I have recognized in other posts, but there are some real superstars that don't ask for much recognition for the impact they continue to make in the world. In no particular order, these are some of the people that made my undergrad so shockingly positive that I want to continue my education and make an impact as they have made on me.
- Cooper Fox - Serving as Co-senator of the business college with Cooper, he was always so determined, organized, and driven. I was a bit of a jokester and easygoing guy in the role, but when he showed up, he meant business. Cooper continues to inspire me through his nobility and through his work ethic.
- Gary Leung - A masters student with a kind heart, Gary is kind to everyone. This guy is one of the busiest and most impressive people I know, yet he still manages to make time for everyone on campus, making it feel like he has nowhere to be or nothing important to do. He's on a great road, and I can't wait to see what he does.
- Alphaeus Donatus Caston Bey - He is always doing something impressive, but never making a big deal about it. His recent venture to Dubland inspired me to get outside of my comfort zone and take on a new adventure. He is one of the coolest and kindest guys I know.
- Kevin Bui is a prime example of what it means to be an active alumnus. He wants what is best for the Titan community and is always putting opportunities out there for students and communities to get together.
- Samantha Young is a viper in the realm of sales. Watching her compete with poise for at the Oregon State University sales competition earlier this year opened my eyes to a completely different skillset I needed to develop, the art of gliding. She is an awesome person and someone I will always root for.
- Matthew Bohannon - More than a boss, a role model that showed me what is possible if you go out there and get it. A creative guy with a strong desire to bring communities together and see the world, Matt brings joy to people without even trying. His dedication to his conviction is contagious and encourages me to be the man he believes I can be.
Conclusion: A Journey of Growth and Possibility
Pursuing a master’s degree in marketing with a focus on international markets is a significant and exciting step in my journey. It represents a commitment to personal and professional growth, a desire to understand and influence global markets, and a dedication to making a positive impact.
The experiences and relationships I have built at Cal State Fullerton have been invaluable, and I am enthusiastic about continuing this journey with the university. By embracing new challenges and opportunities, I am confident that this degree will help me achieve my long-term goals and contribute to a broader understanding of global business dynamics.
As I move forward, I remain committed to exploring new ideas, building meaningful connections, and making a difference in the world. This journey is just beginning, and I am excited to see where it will lead.
