The Nobel Prize in Economics (yes, ‘the veriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel’) was awarded to research highlighting the importance of societal institutions for a country’s prosperity. Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson and James Robinson showed that the introduction of inclusive institutions would create long-term benefits for literally everyone, but extractive institutions only provide short-term gains for a minority of people in power.
On a personal note: We might want to keep that in mind when passing an election booth these days.
