'Deceptive Threads' Crowdfunding Campaign (TAX DEDUCTIBLE!)

Dear Friends & Colleagues

My partner, David Joseph & I have started a crowd funding campaign to raise money for his solo show which I am directing – Deceptive Threads. The show centres on his grandfathers, Elias Joseph and Fred Ommundson, who both had extraordinary lives: Elias was a 19th Century Lebanese immigrant who lied about his birthplace to gain naturalisation and whose name was changed in the immigration process; and Fred, who started life as a cop, became a singer on the Tivoli circuit and ended up as an ASIO spy master, working under an alias.

Donations will be collected via the Australian Cultural Fund, where you can watch a short video of the development and read more about the project. https://australianculturalfund.org.au/projects/deceptive-threads/. All donations over $2 are tax deductible (so now is a good time to support us!).

David writes: 'Stories are threads connecting us to the past, woven into the complex fabric of who we are, both individually and as a nation. Tangled, torn, frayed or strong, these threads turn history into something tangible; narrative bounds time to human experience, moulding our identities with meaning. The narratives of these two men are the threads of my being – in my DNA and in the decisions I make – but their stories also reflect a part of our national identity that haunts me; our long history of fear and aggression towards immigrants. Telling this story helps me make sense of who we are and how I belong, and I believe it speaks to many other Australians’ concerns too. Can you help me tell it?'

In November last year, Dave & I, together with video artist, Zoe Scoglio, and creative consultant, Brian Lipson conducted a successful 3 week creative development that incorporated sophisticated multi-media, live drumming, humour and energetic physical theatre. We are now looking for funds to mount the full production to be presented at Metanoia Theatre, Brunswick from 12 - 23 August this year.
Thanks a lot
Karen
