What is Decentraland?

Decentraland is a kind of virtual reality platform or a Metaverse which is running on Ethereum blockchain and it aims to create a network for creators to incentivize their creations and to collaborate in a shared virtual universe. The immersive and interactive environment makes it more appealing to socialize online. Decentraland will exist as long as users are distributing content and no one can stop it.

Features of Decentraland

Something that makes Decentraland stand out among the social networks controlled by a centralized organization is the absence of central authorities. The communication among the users is Peer-to-Peer; which means they share resources and interact without going through a separate server or a third party.

Moreover, being decentralized makes it a democratized environment in which no agents have the power to modify the software or to prevent people from accessing the platform.

Use Cases of Decentraland

Users can do various things on the platform. With the Decentraland scripting language everyone can create games, dynamic 3D scenes and applications on top of Decentraland. This scripting language covers payments, sounds, user interaction encoding, texture loading and object creating.

Non-programmers can enjoy the sceneries, experience the virtual entertainments and play online games. You can hang out with your friends on Decentraland instead of online forums and group chats.

Developers can monetize applications and creators can do the same with their content. We can buy and sell digital assets and virtual real estates as NFTs.

Last but not least, Decentraland can be used as a Marketing center. Users can rent billboards or high-traffic land parcels to promote their events, products or services. We can create a virtual version of the New York’s Times Square in Decentraland. As the project grows, new use cases will emerge which might be intangible for our generation.

Decentraland’s History

It all began in 2015 when the tendency towards cryptocurrencies was not as much as it is right now. During the past 7 years so many new crypto and DeFi projects have been born; but back in 2015 there was a lack of needed blockchain infrastructure to create a user-oriented platform.

Things started to get more serious in the crypto world as the years went by. In 2018 Coinbase website which is an online cryptocurrency exchange had up to 8.4 million users. The explosion in the decentralized world prepared the atmosphere for the beginning of new Blockchain commerce.

Stone Age

Allocating ownership of digital real estate in Decentraland began by proof of concept. There were some 2D pixels which consists of the identity of the owner and he color of the pixel. This experiment was called the Stone Age of Decentraland

Bronze Age

The 3D land parcels started in this era. A hash reference to a file was referred to each parcel with a modified bitcoin blockchain. The audience in the scene could have access to the objects and textures of the location by downloading the content via Distributed Hash Table or BitTorrent.

On decentraland.org/world the visitors could explore the virtual world, run nodes or download and verify the blockchain.

Iron Age

In this version of Decentraland content distribution and land ownership created a social experience for the audience. In this Age decentralized applications could be made on top of decentraland and be monetized.

The features of this Age were so much more advanced that the former ones. There were Peer to peer interactions, a scripting system for creating content and cryptocurrency payment systems inside Decentraland.
