December Spotlight Nominations
Structural Soils
Award Winning Ground Investigation Contractor based in Bristol, Castleford, Glasgow, Hemel Hempstead, Tonbridge, Wigan
Massive congratulations to all of our staff who have been nominated for going the extra mile in December 2021.
Susy Carrigan, Graduate Geotechnical Engineer, Glasgow,
“Susy has stepped up into the role of site supervisor as well as overseeing a cable percussion rig full-time on our recent site at Dunbar. The project consists of a cable corridor covering a large area, crossing land owned by multiple different landowners that all require to be kept informed of our activities each day. She is in regular communication with different project managers from RSK and SPEN and manages all other activities happening on-site daily, based on their demands. She is responsible for all the inductions, daily briefs and making sure everyone on-site is aware of any relevant changes. The task is quite demanding, and she must change and adapt her plans to undertake the priority areas that are required and complete the project on time. Susy has taken this opportunity to lead a section on a very high-profile project for RSK and the clients have praised her on several occasions.”
Kelvin Hicks, Laboratory Technician, Bristol,
“Kelvin and Connor have been very helpful to me when needing to locate samples and relabel them following queries or changes from clients. They are organised, know their work inside and out and are polite, enthusiastic to help, diligent and hard working to make sure samples are booked in and things are located as easily and logically as possible for us engineers and the laboratory staff. Although it may not seem much, their work to keep things organised and logical is invaluable and has saved me time and stress on a few occasions and no doubt many others too.”
Connor Boylan, Storeman, Structural Soils, Bristol, “Kelvin and Connor have been very helpful to me when needing to locate samples and relabel them following queries or changes from clients.
George Kavanagh, Ground Engineer, Hemel Hempstead,
“George is acting as site agent on a Structural Soils project and is doing a fantastic job keeping it running at one of the most difficult times of the year. The job has been very complicated and challenging but he remains positive. He is keeping morale up and ensuring that every issue that is raised on site is addressed.”
Eloise Harman, Ground Engineer, Hemel?Hempstead,
“I wish to nominate Eloise (Elly) Harman, site agent from the Structural Soils Hemel Hempstead office, for successfully managing the site work on a challenging intertidal ground investigation at Langstone near Southampton. The site had several geotechnical ground investigation techniques all occurring simultaneously with the added excitement of ecologists and archaeologists in attendance (from hand dug trial pitting to window sampling and cable percussive drilling). These tasks were managed seamlessly with the other site constraints, landowners, residents and access constraints. The work was further complicated by the introduction of liquidated damages if we did not complete the intertidal work by 1 October. Elly was able to ensure that the site work commenced early/late to maximise the time we had to operate within the tidal zone and ensured we completed this work on time. Once the site work was completed, we had some issues with the ground water monitoring and delayed lab testing and these were all communicated effectively to the client. Elly had to step outside her comfort zone to deliver bad news to a client and this is never an easy task. She has grown in confidence during this contract and I am sure she will continue to be a great asset to Structural Soils and has a very bright future with us.”
Steve Woods, Principal Technician, Bristol,
“Over the past few months, Steve has been in the laboratory pretty much every weekend to reduce the huge increase in workload as well as to prepare everything to make sure the following week runs smoothly. Even on the weekends he is not in, he will still leave instructions and double check to make sure everything is okay for those that are there. As the laboratory is always the last stage when it comes to site investigation and is at the mercy of issues such as late schedules or incorrect sample names and numbers, there is always a vast amount of pressure on the laboratory staff, but Steve is always doing his best to reduce this as much as possible as well as being one of the four greats: Steve Jobs; Steve Carrell; Steve Irwin; and?Steve Woods!"
