Monopile Foundations to Go Beyond 50-Metre Depths

Offshore engineering consultancy SLPE has been awarded the contract to provide detailed design of wind turbine foundations for Red Rock Power Limited and ESB’s?Inch Cape Offshore Wind Farm.

With water depths of up to 55m, the monopiles for Inch Cape will be among the largest in the world. Inch Cape will feature 72 wind turbines installed across an area of some 150 km2.

A great read about how they have achieved the design of very deep monopiles. Shame we are still stuck using huge mass concrete footings for wind turbines on land......

How Geotechnics Can Make Life Simpler, Safer And More Certain For Infrastructure Projects

"It is essential to have a clear view of the subsurface and any problems that may arise. What ‘lies beneath’ will invariably have a major impact on project progress and budget adherence – and geotechnics has a key part to play in revealing it."

A great read about reducing geotechnical uncertainty to increase project certainty and decrease the risks of cost overruns. Fantastic introduction to the use of digital data, BIM models, innovation and automated design.

Open Online Course on "Seismology to Earthquake Engineering", offered by école Polytechnique - IP Paris

école Polytechnique - Institut Polytechnique Paris?is offering a new Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) titled?Seismology to Earthquake Engineering.

You can find out more and enroll in this MOOC for free?here! and watch a teaser video presentation of the open online course provided can be watched below:

I have actually enrolled on this course and have started watching the videos. The course is presented through a platform on iPhone called Coursera using an app. The content itself is good and each video is only a few minutes long, which means that they can be fit into life fairly easily.

The course discusses the earth structure, the generation of earthquakes and seismic waves by faults to the seismic response of soils, foundations and structures as well as seismic risk. It investigates various technical fields: rock mechanics, soil dynamics, structural dynamics and dynamic soil-structure interaction. The best part is that it is FREE if you do not need want or need the assessments and certificate. It is, however, low cost even if you do (I paid $59 AUD).

Definitely worth a look if you are interested in earthquake engineering.
