December Episodes

December Episodes

Happy New Year, everybody! ??! I hope you all had a wonderful break. Thanks to everyone who supported the podcast over the last few months, it's really appreciated.

I pushed myself to get two episodes out a week until the 17th of December and then halted it due to so many people being checked out. So the good news is that we have podcast recordings on file that take us up to March!!! That's insane to me, but I am so pleased with how the show is going, how much fun I am having doing it, and the feedback so far has been so good.

In December, we had a real blend of guests on, from Founders who work solely retained, industry-leading trainers, business coaches, a top biller from Germany, and another founder who works in the finance market and is widely known on LinkedIn! All the guests were great to speak to and I am sure you will enjoy each episode.

Episode #14 - Calum Lyle founder of Add Some Zest

Topics discussed in this episode:

  • How Calum billed £500k in his first year setting up Zest after being 'off the tools' for many years
  • How to approach retained business, pros/cons of retained
  • How to truly be authentically YOU!

"I want to radically change recruitment. We can change the perception of recruitment."

Calum was the first client I ever spoke to after setting up my business. I caught him in December just as he was going to the gym and he said "Can I call you back in an hour?" which in my years of recruitment, usually means a polite f*** off ?? but he called back on the hour, gave me time to tell him what I do and asked to meet for coffee. He was and still is, both the nicest & zestiest person in the recruitment industry! ??

"You will find like-minded customers if you are yourself. If you want to be unapologetically yourself, be zesty."

As always, we end each show with the same question: How can people in recruitment get 1% better following today's episode?

"Reps, really... reps in doing things that you arent good at, things that are out of your comfort zone, things that teach you how hard you can push your mind/body and constantly look how you can improve."

Episode #15 - Niclas Garms principle consultant at Venturi

Topics discussed in this episode:

  • How to build a new market in the DACH region.
  • How to win new business in the DACH region.
  • How to work smarter... You don't need to work 7 days a week.

"Every job I have had in recruitment has always been on a cold desk..."

Niclas and I worked with each other at our last company and he is honestly one of the most impressive recruiters I have ever worked with. A super disciplined, hard-working, and ruthless consultant who is unreal at new business development.

As someone who genuinely struggled in the DACH market (I spoke wayyyy to fast and didn't speak any German besides hello, thank you and goodbye) it was great to get into the nitty gritty with someone who was a global top biller, the year he joined the company on an entirely COLD desk!!

"Every week, have a good pipeline of strong, new candidates. No matter what, if you don't have good, new candidates every week, you are going to be in trouble!"

As always, we end each show with the same question: How can people in recruitment get 1% better following today's episode?

"Ask yourself everyday, is what you are doing good for your life? Look after your personal life and make sure you are getting 1% better in all aspects and your recruitment skills will also get better"

Episode #16 - Bobby Banerjee & Shane Riordan from Elev8 Learning

Topics discussed in this episode:

  • How to know who is right for recruitment, are behaviours the most important thing to look out for?
  • What is the best interview process, onboarding and training for new starters?
  • How to approach performance plans for people 1year +?

"Recruitment is for people who can overcome adversity"

Bobby & Shane have helped train/coach thousands of recruiters over the years. We spoke at length about how we can interview people OUT of our industry and make sure we are getting the right people in it. Loads to talk about in regards to the best onboarding strategy, and how to train recruiters who both have or do not have experience."quote"

"85% success rate of onboarding new starters comes with a stellar onboarding strategy and training plan. No, that doesn't mean putting them in a room in front of a computer for a week!"

As always, we end each show with the same question: How can people in recruitment get 1% better following today's episode?

Shane: "The three words most recruitment companies use are 'Specialist, award winning, relationship driven'. By saying those things, you sound EXACTLY like every other recruiter. I want to challenge recruiters to explain HOW they are specialist, not just that they are specialist"
Bobby: "If they want to get 5% better, look at the problems you solve, the challenges of you candidates, clients customers and does your solutions help them?"

Episode #17 - Max Learmonth founder at Forge Talent

Topics discussed in this episode:

  • What is 'BD', what does it mean, how to fully prep, plan, get the reps in, and PICK UP THE PHONE!
  • BD process, cold call openers, and finding out what works for you.
  • The importance of relationships, credibility, and meeting every client you work with!

"The industry is a f****d... I think recruiters have got lazy, post COVID. Laziness, lack of training and lack of leadership."

You may have seen Max on LinkedIn and some other recruitment podcasts, and when I set this podcast up on my spreadsheet with my 'dream guests' he was one of the top people to reach out to, and thank god I did! We had such a great, open, honest conversation about the state of the industry and the topic I am super passionate about... BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT!!

"Business development is an opportunity to start a new relationship and an opportunity to demonstrate your credibility. To build a relationship, I ask them loads of questions about THEM as a person, what they like/dislike about recuiters and actually listen to them."

As always, we end each show with the same question: How can people in recruitment get 1% better following today's episode?

"If you commit to somebody that you are going to call, provide feedback or a service to, just do it."
