?? Markmonitor Update: Technical Community Coalition for Multistakeholderism

By: Leanne Kenny , Manager, Global Industry Relations, EMEA

Markmonitor is proud to announce that we have joined the Technical Community Coalition for Multistakeholderism (TCCM). Established in early 2024 by the ccTLD registries auDA (.au), CIRA (.ca), InternetNZ (.nz), and Nominet (.uk), the coalition’s members come from the Internet’s technical community and have a common goal to support and defend multi-stakeholder Internet governance.??

A multi-stakeholder model includes stakeholders from different sectors and communities, for example, technology, governments, the private sector, civil society, law enforcement, and academia. It gives an opportunity for all stakeholders to collaborate and have a voice in the development of policy that impacts them. This model can benefit the world of technological innovation where traditional governance models can struggle to keep pace with the adoption and use of emerging technology – artificial intelligence (AI) being a recent example.??

Global digital issues have become increasingly more important to governments that are more familiar with a ‘top down’ approach to policy development than the concept of multi-stakeholderism. The negotiation process of the UN’s Global Digital Compact (GDC) (a framework for global governance of digital technology and AI) has received criticism because it was formally driven by the 193 Member States. The TCCM expressed concern over the lack of opportunity for multi-stakeholder dialogue.??

Markmonitor participates in multi-stakeholder policy development through ICANN where we are key contributors and advocate for our client’s views in the policy development work of the Generic Names Supporting Organisation (GNSO) and Brand Registry Group (BRG). We are also a supporter of the UKIGF, the national internet governance forum for the UK, which this year discussed misinformation and disinformation in democracy, the governance of AI, the digital divide and the hot topic of multistakeholderism. The outputs of the UKIGF will feed into the IGF, which takes place in Riyadh this month, December 2024.??

As I mentioned, multi-stakeholderism has been a hot topic this year and will continue to be in 2025 when the World Summit on the Information Society: 20-year review (WSIS+20) takes place. Markmonitor’s Global Industry Relations Team will keep you updated on the relevant developments throughout 2025, and our membership in the TCCM will ensure that the technical community continues to be recognized as a key stakeholder in global internet governance discussions.??

?? Learn How Domain Names Are Regulated in China

The policies, rules, and regulations that oversee domain names in China are referred to as the “Administration of China Internet Domain.” In this blog post, Head of Markmonitor China Registrar, Heidi Zhang , discusses the history of internet and domain administration and regulation in China.
