Decathlon, world’s leading sporting goods retailer establishes its global warehouse in Mauritius

Decathlon Ltd, world-leading sporting goods retailer in collaboration with the Mauritius Freeport Development (MFD) Ltd opens its fourth global warehouse in Mauritius. Decathlon has chosen Mauritius among 10 other most competitive destinations including Dubai, for its expansion in the African and Asian region. 

The Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Dr. The Honourable Renganaden Padayachy accompanied by officials of the Economic Development Board (EDB) and the Mauritius Freeport Development (MFD) Ltd, conducted an official site visit on Wednesday 10th February 2021  to the new Decathlon warehouse located in  Riche-Terre.

Speaking to the press, the Honourable Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development underlined that the setting up of the Decathlon warehouse in Mauritius will further contribute to enhance the reputation of Mauritius as a strategic freeport, logistics and distribution hub for the Asian and African regions. Moreover, Dr. The Honourable Renganaden Padayachy added that this project bears testimony to the conducive investment and business ecosystem which has positioned Mauritius 13th globally and 1st in Africa in the World Bank Ease of Doing Business Report 2020 thereby boosting investors’ confidence in our country. The Minister also stated that the implementation of such projects will further attract foreign direct investment while increasing job creation, boosting economic growth and promoting economic diversification.

The Honourable Minister also emphasized that EDB is committed to provide all the support to facilitate the setting up and expansion of global companies in Mauritius.

Mr. Dominique de Froberville, Chief Executive Officer of the Mauritius Freeport Development Ltd, emphasized that the presence of Decathlon Ltd clearly demonstrates the technological and infrastructural capabilities, quality of service and competitiveness of Mauritius. The new warehouse spans over a surface area 26,000 m2 with investment to the tune of MUR 700 million.

Founded in 1976, Decathlon has a global presence across 57 countries and regions with a workforce of 100,000 employees and has over 1600 stores worldwide. The total turnover of Decathlon is EUR 12.4 billion which is equivalent to the Gross Domestic Product of Mauritius. It should be underlined that this project represents tremendous economic opportunities for Mauritius to position itself as a major regional logistics hub for mass distribution.

It is worth highlighting that Decathlon will launch its retail shop in April 2021 at the Bagatelle Mall. Decathlon has already injected MUR 250 million and will be employing more than 50 staff for its retail outlet project.
