Decarbonizing with Alternative Fuels

Traditionally, cement is made using ‘clinker’. However, creating this ingredient requires the burning of fossil fuels and produces about 40% of the cement industry’s CO2 emissions.

At Holcim, for us the only way forward is to replace fossil fuels with alternatives, such as biomass and other materials that are at the end of their useful life.

We are constantly investing in state-of-the-art technologies and innovating to find newer and better alternative fuels. We are striving to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, and some of our plants in Europe are already on 100% substitution.

Our solution is multifold - not only are we reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and lowering the carbon intensity of our cement, but we are also offering a safe and ecological answer to waste at the end of its life. This is our contribution to the circular economy.
