Decarbonising User Journeys
Reduce your environmental impact by decarbonising your user journeys

Decarbonising User Journeys

I'm on a mission to help reduce the environmental impact of the internet.

I've created a new method to help you deliver faster, simpler and more effective user journeys that have less impact on the environment.

Why decarbonise?

The internet is accelerating the climate crisis.

The electricity used to power the internet's infrastructure makes it the world's largest coal-powered machine, producing more emissions than the aviation industry.

To help we must urgently reduce the environmental impact of our digital products and services.

Decarbonising benefits the environment by enabling you to deliver the most amount of value using the least amount of energy, offering a truly sustainable digital strategy.

Decarbonised journeys are more lightweight so they download faster - making them more accessible, inclusive, usable, resilient and effective resulting in broader societal, economic and performance benefits.

How to decarbonise?

Use my simple method and management system help you systematically decarbonise your user journeys using W3C's Web Sustainability Guidelines.

  1. Align - Agree on exactly why you are doing this work and what you hope to achieve from doing it.
  2. Focus - Start small rather than tackling your entire digital estate. Choose your highest-value user journey as your initial focus to both accelerate and maximise the impact of your work.
  3. Benchmark - Benchmark page weights per visit and the carbon footprint of each step in your user journey using tools such as The Website Carbon Calculator and Google Lighthouse.
  4. Set targets - Establish specific improvement targets for each step of your user journey and deadlines to achieve them by.
  5. Decarbonise - Systematically decarbonise your user journey by using our free decarbonisation management system to help you plan, monitor and manage your adoption of the W3C's Web Sustainability Guidelines.

I can help you decarbonise your user journeys

I'm an environmental scientist graduate and a user experience expert on a mission to reduce the environmental impact of the internet.

I’ve developed this methodology for individuals and organisations to use to accelerate the decarbonisation of their digital products and services.

Whether you need guidance on how to lead the process yourself, hands-on support to implement it or coaching to help you stay on course, I’m here to help you make measurable progress.

Drop me a message or add a comment to see how I can help.

Interesting; perhaps worth even going more fundamental and asking how an organisation might effectively connect with their audience offline. Would it improve their environmental impact further? Is there a space in which website are a lower-carbon way of sharing info and one where they're not? My impression is that websites are often touted as a silver bullet but a more strategic view of marketing and communications and customer service would tell a different story?

Love this, James! ?? A few years ago, I ran a little experiment to decarbonise my website, and I think you’ll appreciate it. Not only was it a fun challenge, but it resulted in a site that’s lean, energy-efficient, lightning-fast to load, super SEO-friendly, virtually hack-proof, and effortless to update. A win for both my business and the planet! ?? https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/experimenting-towards-more-sustainable-website-alan-colville/
