Decarbonisation of the North Sea | OGA201

We are thrilled to be able to discuss our involvement in the groundbreaking Decarbonisation Project - OGA201, a transformative study aimed at revolutionizing the interface between distributed renewable power sources and offshore oil and gas installations. As an active participant in this pioneering initiative, we have contributed our expertise in brownfield modifications, electrification, and power generation projects to develop an optimized method for integrating secure and low-emissions power into existing offshore assets.

?

Traditionally, platform electrification and power generation in the UKCS have been approached on a platform-by-platform basis. However, the challenges posed by aging assets with limited capacity have often rendered these projects unfeasible due to the extensive modifications required. Recognising this obstacle, our team of talented engineers here at Katoni embarked on a mission on the 1st January last year to devise a concept that would enable platforms to electrify their topsides power with minimal on-platform modifications, while significantly reducing emissions in an economically viable manner.

?

The primary objective of the Decarbonisation Project was to establish a standardized and industrialized methodology for large-scale electrification across the North Sea region. By promoting concepts like repeatability, scalability, and knowledge sharing, our study sought to define a consumer-driven technology solution that minimises modifications on existing assets. Our focus was on designing and specifying the infrastructure necessary to facilitate this innovative approach.

?

To achieve this, we developed a modular design that could be flexibly scaled to accommodate regional infrastructure clusters and the distribution of renewable energy sources. This adaptable framework allows for a high percentage of existing UKCS infrastructure to be covered, paving the way for substantial emissions reduction. Through an envelope-based approach, we quantified the potential emissions reduction from implementing our concept, emphasising the significant positive impact it could have on the environment.

?

Moreover, we explored alternative low carbon fuel sources, including hydrogen and other renewables, to supplement or replace wind energy. By evaluating various options, we aim to optimize the energy mix and identify the most sustainable solutions for powering offshore installations.

?

We are excited about the possibilities that the Decarbonisation Project presents for the offshore energy industry. Our commitment to driving innovation and sustainability has been instrumental in shaping this transformative endeavor. Join us on this journey as we work towards a safer, greener, and more efficient future for offshore operations.
