Dec 2023

Welcome to The Medisynergy Newsletter.

Exploring the synergy between business and healthcare as an A-level student learning more and more about this industry while helping others to learn with me!

In Partnership with Podymos.

Who am I?

I’m Imogen Aires, an A-level student who just this month applied to study Biomedical Sciences at university for next year. My original goal was to become a heart surgeon but after many interviews on my podcast and days of work experience, I discovered that clinical medicine is not the career for me right now but more lab-centred areas would work better.?

What‘s different about me and my podcast?

Well, first and foremost I am still at college! The whole reason I started the Medisynergy podcast was to fill an obvious gap where there was no one providing information to people my age in the form of a podcast- especially with the info coming from someone the same age as well. I wanted to help others in my position while helping myself to learn as well.

Why are you starting a newsletter now?

This month I have reached my 100th podcast episode, attended the GIANT health event, and have officially been ‘in the industry’ for 1 year. I’ve reflected and noticed that many people who engage in my content prefer short-form or written content over the full 40-minute video or audio podcast episode. So… I thought I’d give you a different side of Medisynergy in written form so you get a feel for what I'm up to and what's new with Medisynergy!

Podcasts this month:

#98 and #99 with Dr Michelle Griffin, discussing the importance of focusing on women’s health and working towards a future where EVERYONE is educated properly on the health of women for a better society. Michelle is a femtech writer for the BBC and clinician so has a technical view but also as a mother of daughters, a personal side to her argument that women’s health is so vital for everyone to be aware of.

#100 and #101 with Dr James Somauroo, the Co-founder of the SomX empire. James was the first person to invite me to a healthtech event and even make me aware of what healthtech is so it’s only fitting to interview him for this milestone episode! He shares his story of working in the NHS as an anaesthetist, transitioning out of clinical practice and jumping into healthtech communications instead! (If you’re a doctor I’d really recommend listening to the origin story bit of the episode) And from a new-to-healthtech perspective, I ask James how other well-established leaders can start encouraging students like me to join the healthtech space as well. Unfortunately, we’re not always a very proactive bunch so need an extra confidence boost in an area of interest.

Only two episodes this month because it’s Christmas and I’ve got to let any new listeners catch up on the previous 100 before I release anymore - If you’re driving to a family Christmas event I expect this to be on in the car on the way there ;)

GIANT Health Event: 4-5th December

I have written a separate article on this altogether so do check that out here.

But, to summarise, it was a huge ‘pinch me’ moment to be surrounded by 1,000s of people with bright ideas about improving the future of health for the UK. We will all be patients at some point in our lives so seeing leaders, technology, and services that can make the time we spend as patients shorter and easier is extremely encouraging, to say the least!

Shoutout to Podymos:

A huge thank you to Podymos for sponsoring the Medisynergy Podcast. Podymos is a medical device marketing agency that helps you optimise your reach from messaging to marketing execution, allowing you to spend time where it matters. And I have loved this process! Having gone through my ‘messaging’ I can really define why I’m doing what I do and who I’m doing it for. Podymos also partnered with me to create my business cards and pull-up banners as seen at the GIANT Health Event which were a huge success and brilliant for adding credibility to any venture.

In other news…

I have now registered to vote! By the time the next election comes around in March, I’ll be able to put my vote in for the first time. Being the researcher that I am, I read through the manifestos of the three most prominent parties and compared the general and health policies. I have to say- it is VERY interesting to start being more politically minded and see what each party holds as a priority. I hope to write a short article about this on Peerr to delve into these issues a bit deeper.

What will Medisynergy look like in 2024?

I’ve got lots of ideas for this coming year but of course do have to keep reminding myself that A-levels come first. All good and well having these 'supercurricular' activities but without my A-levels, I’ll be in a bit of a sticky situation. All the videos from the GIANT event will be posted at the start of January so keep an eye out for those. The plan is to start posting onto YouTube as well for video AND audio content. I’ll keep exploring ideas with the newsletter, social media and potentially a website as well so do get in touch if you have any advice for that!?

The next month's round-up article will be released in January so in the meantime you have 100 podcasts to go and listen to, a handful of Peerr articles to read, and a Christmas to celebrate.

Until then…

Imogen :)

What a brilliant hack! It looks obvious but most medics never do it before plunging into a long career. Makes all the sense in the world to talk to people who are already where you want to go (or not go). A podcast makes it even better. I cant imagine how much time, headache and heartache you saved by making an informed decision early in your career. Looking forward to future editions of your newsletter. Good luck!
