Debuting the Plumis Demonstration Vehicle

Debuting the Plumis Demonstration Vehicle

I’m pleased to unveil Plumis’ brand new demonstration vehicle which will hopefully be coming to a town near you in the not too distant future. In fact, we’d be delighted to bring it right to your office if you have a suitable outdoor space.

The van has been kitted out with Automist Smartscan Hydra, allowing us to show how our award-winning fire suppression system works in action. I’m looking forward to taking the demo van on the road to visit more customers and attend events across the country, once the Covid situation permits. For small numbers, we can already do Covid-safe demonstrations.

With a working Automist setup onboard, we’re able to perform a demo activation on site, which is particularly effective when explaining the benefits of this innovative solution.

As I’m sure some of you may already be aware, Automist is an updated take on a traditional sprinkler. It’s an active fire suppression system (AFSS) designed not only to tackle the modern fire threat, but first and foremost save the lives of the people it aims to protect.

Every second counts with fire. A person must escape before conditions in a room become unsurvivable. This is much sooner than many would think as lethal amounts of smoke and toxic gas, the biggest dangers, can build up rapidly.

What makes Automist different is that it can activate earlier in scenarios where sprinklers can struggle, such as slow smouldering fires. This not only provides a better chance of survival and escape, but also suppresses the fire before significant quantities of toxic smoke have built up and the fire has a chance to spread, thus reducing the potential damage and threat to life.

A reliable integrated early warning smoke and heat combination alarm is part of every installation to raise the alarm long before the fire starts to emerge. This sensor can be coupled with a communications device for remote monitoring to inform a responsible person or call for help.

Its intelligent algorithms are trained to detect heat and recognise the temperature signatures that represent a dangerous fire. The electronically operated nozzle will then deploy a targeted stream of watermist into the base of the fire.

Watermist uses fine water droplets so the surface area of the suppression material is larger, which helps to quickly reduce temperatures and oxygen supplied to the fire. Natural turbulence created by the fire draws these droplets into the plume which has a cooling effect and displaces oxygen, preventing the fire from growing. Watermist achieves this using a fraction of the water that a traditional sprinkler does.

To ensure watermist is entrained into the seat of the fire, Automist’s multidirectional sprayheads are mounted on the wall instead of the ceiling. So it can target specific areas and is better at dealing with concealed fires such as those started by white goods, which are becoming a more common cause of fires in the home.

Numerous studies also show that the people most at risk of death or injury due to dwelling fires are the most vulnerable groups of society, including the elderly or disabled. These individuals may have a variety of complex needs and be unable to escape easily from a fire. Automist helps to maintain survivable conditions in the room of fire origin enabling more time for rescue.

We’ve successfully implemented projects on behalf of a number of councils and housing providers, including installations in eleven sheltered schemes in Lambeth and a successful pilot for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. We found that enabling people to actually see for themselves what makes us different helps them to realise the potential life-saving applications of Automist.

That’s why our demo van is so effective and provides the perfect opportunity for us to demonstrate the capabilities of this innovative system.
