Debunking Some Cancer Myths?
Cancer is a complex and diverse group of diseases affecting millions of people worldwide. Unfortunately, many myths and misconceptions about cancer can cause confusion or fear and even harm those affected. In this blog post, we will attempt to debunk some of the most common false cancer myths and celebrate the advances in modern cancer treatment that have improved many cancer patients' survival and quality of life.
?
Myth 1:Cancer is a death sentence.
This is one of the most pervasive and harmful myths about cancer. The truth is that many cancers can be treated successfully if detected early and treated effectively.?According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the 5-year survival rate for some cancers, such as breast, prostate, and thyroid cancers, is now 90% or better.?The overall 5-year survival rate for all cancers combined is currently about 68%2. Of course, these rates vary depending on the individuals, type, stage, and location of the cancer and the availability and accessibility of treatment. However, the general trend is that cancer survival rates have improved significantly over the past decades, thanks to advances in cancer research, screening, diagnosis, therapy, and supportive care.

Myth 2: Cancer is contagious.
This myth can create unnecessary stigma and isolation for cancer patients. The fact is that cancer is not a contagious disease that can spread from person to person. The only situation in which cancer can spread from one person to another is organ or tissue transplantation from a donor who previously had cancer. "However, this risk is extremely low and doctors avoid using organs or tissues from donors who have a history of cancer". Some cancers may be caused by certain viruses or bacteria, such as human papillomavirus (HPV) or Helicobacter pylori. Still, these infections are not the same as cancer and can be prevented or treated with vaccines or antibiotics.

Myth 3: Cutting out sugar will cure cancer.
This myth is based on the idea that cancer cells consume more sugar than normal cells and that depriving them of sugar will starve them. However, there is no scientific evidence that eating sugar will worsen your cancer or that stopping sugar will make your cancer shrink or disappear. Sugar is an energy source for all cells in the body, including normal cells. Cutting sugar from your diet may harm your health by causing malnutrition, weakness, and fatigue. "A balanced diet that includes moderate amounts of sugar and other carbohydrates is recommended for most people with cancer."

Myth 4: A biopsy or surgery will cause cancer to spread.
This myth stems from the fear that poking or cutting into a tumour will release cancer cells into the bloodstream or lymphatic system and cause them to metastasize to other body parts. However, this is unlikely because doctors use special techniques and precautions to prevent this.?For example, they use sterile needles and instruments, seal off blood vessels around the tumour, and remove a margin of healthy tissue around the tumour to ensure complete removal2. A biopsy or surgery is often necessary to confirm the cancer diagnosis and remove as much of the tumour as possible. These procedures can also provide valuable information about the type, stage, and characteristics of the cancer, which can help guide further treatment decisions.

Conclusion
Cancer is a challenging and complex disease that requires accurate information, scientific evidence, and multidisciplinary collaboration to prevent, diagnose, treat, and manage. By debunking false cancer myths and celebrating advances in modern cancer treatment, we hope to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and improve outcomes for people with cancer. We also encourage everyone to support cancer research, advocacy, and care by donating, volunteering, or participating in events such as World Cancer Day. Together, we can make a difference in the fight against cancer.
