DEBUNKING MYTHS ABOUT ISO CERTIFICATIONS

In the midst of the ongoing online debate surrounding ISO certifications, I find it imperative to dispel some common misconceptions. Drawing from my extensive expertise in ISO 17024 Certification of Persons, accumulated over two decades under Standards Malaysia - a division of the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (#MITI) - I aim to illuminate the diverse realm of ISO accreditations and certifications.
To begin, it's essential to recognize that ISO certifications are far from a one-size-fits-all solution. With a wide array of standards tailored to various sectors and specific individual certifications, the landscape is vast and multifaceted.
Addressing Misconceptions
Recent political discussions, including comments by former Deputy Minister of MITI, Ong Kian Ming, have highlighted significant misunderstandings about #ISO certifications. Contrary to assertions, ISO 17024 is specifically designed for individuals. ISO is not just for organizations. This #ISO17024 standard, refer to "Conformity assessment - General requirements for bodies operating certification of persons," outlines strict criteria for certifying the competence of individuals in their respective fields. It ensures that certified persons meet rigorous standards and maintain proficiency.
During the recent #SungaiBakap by-election campaign, a misunderstanding about ISO 14001:2015, which pertains to environmental management systems for organizations, underscored the importance of accurately understanding the different types of ISO certifications, including those for individuals. This incident emphasizes the necessity of avoiding misinformation that could mislead the public.
Clarifying these misconceptions is crucial for understanding the breadth and importance of ISO standards. It's essential to distinguish between ISO Certification of Persons and Qualification Certification to appreciate their distinct purposes and benefits.

Our Journey
Looking back to 2006, when my team and I established the Certification Body under the auspices of Department of Standards Malaysia, our goal was to achieve ISO 17024 accreditation. At that time, Malaysia's ISO17024 quality infrastructure was still evolving, and IPEC Bureau took the lead in developing certification schemes for skilled workers, professionals, and specialists across various industries. Our aim was to foster inclusive socio-economic growth, a mission aligned with Standards Malaysia's ongoing efforts to fortify national standards and conformity infrastructure.
