Debunking the Myth that Job Seekers Only Want Remote Work

The pandemic brought major shifts in the employment landscape, ushering in new work policies that enabled professionals to work either fully remotely or in a hybrid environment. These days, there is a common misconception that job seekers only want remote work options. And while this may be true for many job seekers, this blanket sentiment cannot be applied to everyone. The recent filtered searches of one month of data on NYFA Classifieds' Job Board reveals job seekers’ preferences.

Our findings show that 56% of the job seekers who used the filter searched for only remote roles. However, that leaves the remaining 44% of job seekers looking for opportunities that are not strictly remote. When we looked further at the numbers, we found that 37% of the searches were for any type of hybrid role. This indicates that candidates value flexibility, which is one of the three main factors that Gen Z and Millennial candidates consider when job hunting.?

Despite the perception that no one wants to return to the office full-time, 6% of the filtered results were for on-site roles only. Some individuals prefer to be in an office with colleagues, perhaps surrounded by fewer distractions than they may have at home. Others work in industries where the nature of their work requires them to be in person. In this scenario, the physical boundary between work and home is more clearly defined.?

We also found that 19% of the searches were for any kind of on-site role. When you consider NYFA Classifieds’ more than 37,500 monthly job seekers, that is over 7,125 potential candidates per month!

This type of filtering helps job seekers narrow their focus on the types of environments that they feel would be the best fit for them. From the advertiser’s perspective, this also means that your job posting will get in front of candidates who want the type of role for which you’re hiring.

As more students graduate from college, it seems that they are favoring hybrid roles. It fascinating how fluid this is: https://www.hr-brew.com/stories/class-2023-employers-work-interest-jobs
