Debunking 5 Myths About Solid Surface
Solid Surface is widely used in commercial and residential projects, but misconceptions about this versatile material persist. In this newsletter, we tackle five myths and uncover the truth!
Myth 1 - Solid Surface and Quartz Are the Same
The Truth
Solid Surface and quartz are both popular choices for countertops and other surfaces, but they have distinct differences.
Quartz is made from crushed stone mixed with resin. This gives it a more rigid structure, which can cause visible seams and make it heavier to install. However, it also has many beautiful colours and is a very durable material.
Solid Surface, on the other hand, is made from acrylic or polyester resins mixed with natural minerals. This allows for seamless, inconspicuous joins, easy repairability, and superior customisation options. Unlike quartz, Solid Surfaces can be thermoformed into unique shapes and refinished to restore their original look.
This gives it fantastic repairability and seamless joining ability, making it ideal for high-traffic areas.
Solid Surface also does not contain silica, which is present in quartz and can be dangerous, potentially causing silica if not correctly fabricated.
It is important to understand that most reputable Quartz fabricators use the correct processes to mitigate any associated health risks when working with the material.
Myth 2 - Solid Surface Is Prone to Staining
The Truth
Solid Surface is entirely non porous, meaning it resists stains far better than materials like marble or granite. Spills from coffee, wine, or ink can be easily wiped away without leaving permanent marks, and unlike natural stones, it does not require regular sealing to maintain its integrity.
Myth 3 - Solid Surface Is Not Eco-Friendly
The Truth
Many Solid Surface manufacturers are embracing sustainability by incorporating recycled content, reducing production waste, and securing certifications such as GREENGUARD for low VOC emissions. Additionally, Solid Surface can be refinished and repaired, extending its lifespan and reducing waste in landfills.
Myth 4 -Solid Surface Is Difficult to Maintain
The Truth
One of the biggest benefits of Solid Surface is its low maintenance. It requires no sealing, and everyday cleaning only requires mild soap and water, with stubborn stains still only requiring a bit more elbow grease and the use of an everyday household cleaner that contains a little bleach. Especiallly stubborn stains can be removed used Bar Keepers Friend.
Scratches and surface damage can also be easily buffed out, making it a worthwhile long term investment.
Myth 5 - Solid Surface Cannot Be Used for Large-Scale Commercial Projects
The Truth
Solid Surface is extensively used in commercial environments such as healthcare, hospitality, and corporate spaces due to its durability, hygiene benefits, and seamless appearance. It is an excellent choice for wash troughs, reception desks, bar tops, teapoints, island units and other hightraffic applications.
