Debunking automation myths in manufacturing

Hi Reader,?
This edition of The Manufacturer Smart Factory Digital Briefing takes on a distinctly robotic slant. As we all know, a key piece of the smart factory jigsaw is automation, and the current landscape of the sector means that it's a technology that is going to play an increasingly vital role in the sector's future.
However, issues relating to the technology still exist. It's no secret that the UK lags behind many other nations in terms of the deployment of robotics and with ongoing labour and skills shortages, there is simply no logic to the lack of investment in automation. To this end, Professor Phil Webb, Royal Academy of Engineering , looks into how businesses can break down the barriers of risk and reluctance.
Part of the issue of course, is that the investment in, and deployment of, robotics and automation, bring with it a number of pre-conceived ideas. We've all heard the 'robots will replace humans' trope many times before. However, other stereotypes around the technology persist, from the notion that roll-out will be too complicated and expensive, to the belief that it would require a whole raft of extra skills. Here, we debunk 7 myths of automation in manufacturing. ??????

Debunking automation myths in manufacturing
Automation has revolutionised manufacturing businesses’ operations through improved efficiency, productivity gains and overall business growth. Indeed, since the early 2010s, consultancy giants have been championing the transformative power of automated systems in manufacturing. However, there are a number of automation myths that still persist as a barrier to adoption.
Breaking the risk and reluctance cycle
With the ongoing labour and skills shortages in the manufacturing sector and industry, there’s no logic to the lack of investment into automation and robotics (A&R) – no logic, but instead an ongoing and difficult situation where businesses have been unwilling to risk the investments needed to make the leap into automation. This represents a critical barrier for the sector.
