DEBRIEF: YOU ARE QUALIFIED

Hey TVC,

Another episode is on the books.

"If you are a Leader, you have to Lead" - ret. Marine Corps Major, Author and Founder of Gary and Dottie Capers Foundation, James Capers Jr.

Let's dive in!

DEBRIEF

1. Born in Bishopville, South Carolina as the Son of a Sharecropper

  • James Capers Jr. was born in a large family as the son of a sharecropper
  • Many of his siblings didn't make it past their childhood
  • His family faced persecution while in Bishopville and had to escape to Baltimore during the Jim Crow era
  • It resulted in Jim meeting the love of his life Dottie and volunteering to join the Marine Corps in 1956 in which African Americans were not allowed until a few years prior to that

2. Early Stages in the Marine Corps

  • Jim spent time in the Middle East due to the Suez Canal being closed and President Eisenhower ordered the Marines to go in to open it back up
  • Jim re-enlisted and that took him to Oceanside, CA where he tried out for Force Recon, the Special Operations group of the United States Marine Corps
  • He didn't pass, but they invited him back and he passed with his Never Quit Attitude
  • This Never Quit Attitude resulted in a Life of Excellence for Jim
  • Jim's Wife, Son and the creator gave him the foundation of a rock to withstand the storms that he was about to encounter

3. Receiving a Battlefield Commission during Vietnam while Saving Countless Lives

  • By the time Jim deployed to Vietnam, he had been in the Marine Corps 10 years and his unit was facing massive losses
  • Several of the Officers didn't make it and Jim was selected to step in which resulted in a Battlefield Commission, a rare milestone in today's modern warfare
  • Jim recalls a night where his corpsman needed some rest, only to realize that he had been wounded and didn't make it which resulted in Jim finding time alone to pray for help from God, but the prayer wasn't answered
  • In one of his last missions before going home, one of the co-pilots was shot and several of the men injured; the bird was unstable, but with Jim onboard, God answered that prayer at the right time

4. Unifying America as the Face of the Marine Corps during Civil Rights

  • The Armed Forces had just completed Integration for People of Color and while Jim was still in recovery from his injuries, he was selected to be the Face of the Marine Corps during a recruitment campaign called Ask a Marine
  • This was a sign of progress especially during the Civil Rights era
  • Many Men and Women joined the Marines because of Jim after seeing themselves in this campaign

5. Post Marine Corps

  • After 22 years and participating in over 50 Classified Missions, Jim retired as a Major, but was selected for Lieutenant Colonel
  • Without any VA benefits and an unfriendly environment to Vietnam Veterans, Jim had to find a way to take care of his family
  • He got a job as a VP at Jefferson Powder Corporation who needed to upgrade their diversity and ended up sending him to Harvard Business School
  • Jim loves music and he ended up buying a radio station after receiving support from the U.S. Small Business Administration which made him very successful
  • Jim also built a church and started a ministry with his family
  • Jim became one of the most decorated Marines to ever serve and was nominated for the Medal of Honor twice, but downgraded without any explanation
  • A tribe is gathering to ensure this 87 year old legend, Jim Capers Jr. is awarded what he rightfully deserves; the MEDAL OF HONOR

6. Faith Through the Storm

  • His success was short lived though because Jim lost both his wife and son not too long after
  • Jim created a foundation after them called the Gary and Dottie Capers Foundation to help veterans and people overcome challenges in their lives
  • Jim was so distraught that when he was on the plane to San Diego for a documentary, film and a book, he wanted the plane to go down
  • However, God was not done with him and when he landed, he saw a bright light with open arms which resulted in the successful completion of this next assignment: A Book Called Faith through the Storm and a Documentary called Major Capers: The Legend of Team Broadminded
