DEBRIEF: LEADING A LIFE OF SERVICE STARTS WITH YOU

DEBRIEF: LEADING A LIFE OF SERVICE STARTS WITH YOU

Hey TVC!

Another episode is on the books.

"I tell all the Active Duty and Vets that When People say Thank you for Your Service, Don't Ever take that for granted because it did not used to be that way" -37th Commandant of the Marine Corps, Board Member, Corporate Consultant, Motivational Speaker and retired General, Robert B. Neller

Let's dive in!

DEBRIEF

1. Growing up in East Lansing, Michigan and joining the Marine Corps

  • General Robert Neller grew up during the Vietnam Era where joining the service was not as readily accepted as it today
  • General Neller came from a Military Family where his brother was accepted into the Naval Academy
  • He originally wanted to be a lawyer, but then ended up being commissioned in the Marine Corps
  • He believes that all services are warriors because the military is not for everyone

2. Serving over 44+ Years in the United States Marine Corps

  • One of the highlights in General Neller's distinguished Career is improving the Tuition Assistance Policy for Active Duty Marines by listening to his team which helped influence the decision Marines made in their careers
  • General Neller's experience when joining the service during the Post Vietnam era gave him a sense of belief that he and other leaders can change the Marine Corps to make it better than it was before
  • Many of his mentors were his senior advisors and they helped influence his leadership style
  • He says the Legacy of any Leader should be that the people they served with believe that they cared about them

  • General Neller didn't initially see Women in the Corps since he was in the Infantry until he was in Somalia and in Iraq
  • He mentioned a famous story of the Commandant being asked during World War 2 what you are going to call the Women joining the Marines and he said "Marines"

3. Veterans succeeding in the Civilian World

  • On Board of Directors Calls, he mentioned that Business leaders want to hire Veterans more than ever
  • He mentioned that the vocational trades are ripe with opportunities and also in the First Responder Communities, especially in Law Enforcement where not one organization is at 100% staffing
  • He firmly believes that Veterans will succeed in the Business world with all the qualities, skills and traits that they have
  • Veterans go through a lot of training and education which makes them very competitive in the business world
  • Veterans are very trainable and coachable which is why organizations love them
  • You have to have a Plan and figure out what you want to do (Job, School, Business, etc.) and then Prosecute with Extreme Prejudice aka Close with and Destroy the Target
  • He recommends a Podcast called Post Traumatic Winning by Mike McNamara
  • He mentioned that many of the servicemembers and veterans taking their lives are young
  • The worse thing you can do is stop working out, stop taking care of yourself, start self medicating, etc.

4. Personal Development and Leadership

  • You won't be at 110% everyday and sometimes operating at 80% on certain days is enough because service or life is tough
  • Discipline is one of the keys to success and it's going to require you having to Personally Discipline yourself on how you run your life
  • There is no honor or purpose in making someone quit such as in Recruit Training and even in the Business World
  • One of the real virtues of a Leader is making those believe that they can accomplish a goal, especially for those who doubt themselves
  • Effective leadership is building up your leaders to a point where you don't have to be as involved and you get to a point where are you just observing
  • Effective organizations with a great culture run well when people are there doing their roles without having to be told to do it
  • Asking a lot of questions and understanding Why is Key to making an organization better
  • Great leaders walk around and include their team in the decision making process when they are pitching ideas to move the organization forward
  • Have a sense of Personal Responsibility and Accountability, especially during life transitions such as leaving the service because it's on YOU
