#MyCorona: one year on ... what's actually "better"?
So, one year into #MyCorona world. We toasted (via Skype, of course) last Saturday one year in this surreal existence with our friends Kirsty and Kenny. It's easy and I guess just plain human to focus upon what you have lost - and much has been sunk by COVID-19 since March 2020. There is frankly nothing much tougher than not being able to say goodbye to you mother or loved one (and my heart goes out to anyone else who has suffered such grief). However, let's focus for a moment on the chinks of light, the positives, that have come out of the past 12 months.
I wrote an article for #CIGRE in July last year, focusing on the roller coaster existence of becoming head of Siemens Energy in The Netherlands, just as COVID-19 really started to take hold. What I failed to appreciate at the time was that, despite the wild ride, there were some really important learning points coming to the surface - like what's REALLY important to me.
Some good has and will come from our new normal. Sometimes it's tricky to spot the gems when all around you is just plain tough
So, here goes.
I have been incredibly fortunate through my career, having some special people who invested time in me, especially during the difficult moments and decisions. My coaches and mentors (you know who you are!) have given so much to me. So, I have once again taken the opportunity to become a mentor to a number of young professionals within our energy industry. Colleagues with diverse backgrounds, differing views, new perspectives and with a common appetite to embrace our biggest challenge for 100 years: decarbonizing our World. Our discussions have become the highlight of my working week. I'm not sure who learns more, them or me. What I do know is that there are diverse, bright minds out there, just looking to embrace the challenges. Wow.
Become a mentor ... the highlight of my working week
Some good has and will come from our new normal. Sometimes it's tricky to spot the gems when all around you is just plain tough. Believe me, the gems are there. Take the time to see what you can give to other colleagues in terms of your experience, and learn from the diverse, fresh eyes looking at our world. Be inclusive, open your mind to different perspectives. Try it: you just might like it too.
We will get to see The Killers in concert, and yes, this was a big disappointment in our house when the event was postponed, but it will happen in 2022. I'll just practice Mr Brightside for a bit longer ...
