The Death Of Enterprise Architecture As We Know It.

WHY OUTDATE ENTERPRISE ARCHITECTURE IS SLOWLY KILLING BUSINESS SUCCESS.

Let's face it, the world of enterprise architecture is often a relic of a bygone era. Yes, EA is a little more iterative and Agile-focused than it is Waterfall. And it does take into account strategic alignment across the business. However, the methodology being applied to architect the enterprise still resembles the EA frameworks from the 1970s and 80s.

The approach is so rigid, so inflexible, and the data so static that it might as well be etched in stone tablets. Meanwhile, the rest of the world has moved on to an expectation of "instant data, accurate data, always available, need it now".

OUT OF DATE DATA. OUTDATED MINDSET

With the world, business demands and technology changing faster than ever, it's no wonder that enterprise architecture as it currently stands is struggling to keep up on all fronts from the data and deliverables, to the methodology and the mindset.

Sure, the architects claim to understand every single nook and cranny of the organization, but what good is that knowledge if it's always outdated as soon as it’s developed? It's like knowing everything about an old car that's rusting away in a junkyard - who cares?

MISALIGNED BUSINESS NEEDS

One of the main challenges is that enterprise architecture is often viewed as a theoretical exercise, divorced from the practical realities of day-to-day operations.

Architects may spend months or even years developing elegant models and frameworks, only to find that they don't align with the actual needs of the business. This can result in a significant gap between the ideal state of the organization and the messy reality on the ground.

BREAKING FREE FROM THE STATUS QUO & RED TAPE

And let's not forget about the hefty price tag that comes with enterprise architecture. Hiring an army of architects to create endless diagrams and charts can cost a fortune, and for what? To create a maze of bureaucratic red tape that stifles innovation and creativity?

In short, current enterprise architecture models are a relic of the past, a dinosaur that's struggling to adapt to a rapidly changing world. It's time to embrace the future of "cybernated data-driven architecture" and leave the old ways behind. Otherwise, you might as well be trying to steer a horse and carriage through rush-hour traffic.

EVOLUTION & ADAPTATION OF ENTERPRISE ARCHITECTURE

However, to be fair, many enterprise architects are acutely aware of this challenge and work hard to bridge the gap. They understand that the best models and frameworks are those that are rooted in real-world data and feedback from stakeholders.

In an age of rapidly evolving technologies and business models, it can be difficult to stay on top of the latest trends and developments. As a result, enterprise architecture must constantly evolve and adapt in order to remain relevant to the needs of the organization.

I will say though, that most enterprise architects are doing a great job of herding cats with a lasso, horse and a dog. It's not their fault that the tools of their trade haven't kept pace. Which is the point that this blog is making.

Think differently. You're not the problem. You are the solution.

Agree, to the point. IT is hard, solution implementations are expensive and its fitment into the organization's IT ecosystem is complex. On the other hand, business stakeholders were misled by external consultants, vendors, and business partners by showing shiny, simple, and productive solutions. EAs need to work with businesses to set their expectations right, and enable businesses to own the solutions/systems, in addition to implementing the IT projects. Build relationships, work with business, and be a salesperson and diplomat on top of your excellent technical and solution skills.
