Death by Constitution
The text of the Second Amendment reads in full:?“A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. That's it.?All of it.?
Keep in mind that this was when "arms" referred to muskets.?And maybe cannons.?It states that arms are necessary only for a "well-regulated militia."?Imagine if the Founders envisioned AR-15s and AK-47s, which can kill dozens of people in less than a minute.?And that a teen-age boy could buy a couple of those mass-killing military weapons right after his 18th birthday.?They would think we are nuts and self-destructive to follow their centuries-old sentence.?
Politically, I am an Independent.?Lean liberal.?But Atlas Shrugged is one of my favorite books.?I have always respected the viewpoint of my Republican friends...up until The Lyin' King became their god. (Not all of them were sucked in.)?But now, I have to say that the Republicans in Congress –?evil cowards, who are owned lock-stock-and-barrel by the NRA (and the Trump base) – simply need to go to Hell.?Even the ones that I had thought were decent human beings, like Sasse and Romney.?

At least 19 children and 2 teachers are dead.?Murdered.?Massacred.?Slaughtered.?By a teen-ager with an AR-15, which those Republican civil servants have protected his right to own.?Those deaths are on Cruz, Abbott, McConnell, and all the rest. Actually, Hell might be too cool for them.?I saw posted somewhere that we should be thankful for all the brave children of our nation who have sacrificed their lives to protect our right to bear arms.?That about nails it.?Sadly.?
And one more comment:?Originalism, which is focused on what the Founders were thinking when they constructed the Constitution, is an anachronistic perspective for formulating policy decisions today.?The world was vastly different then from what it is in the 21st century.?Our government should be making its decisions on the basis of what maximizes the sum of the happiness quotients for all our citizens. Not on a vestigial, albeit then-brilliant, document.?The Constitution is a great starting point.?But following it obsessively and to the letter is just ridiculous and often self-destructive.?Don't get me started.?Sorry about the rant.?But unnecessary death pisses me off.
