The Death of Compact Phones

What is the current screen size of your smartphone?
I am guessing it will be between 6 and 7 inches. And that is an industry standard in today's media-consuming world. But if you peek back into the past, you will realize that small flagship phones are nearly extinct or even dead.
Take the example of Samsung
Samsung has been in the smartphone market for a very long time. From 4 inches, 5 inches, and 6 inches to now nearly 7 inches, the smartphone's screen size has always been increasing with every release. They did launch a mini (Samsung Galaxy S3 mini) version of their smartphones, but that too was busted and discontinued. Now, from budget phones to flagships, screen size is way bigger. And if you want to pay for the smallest phones out there, you have to pay the flagship amount.
Take the example of Apple
If you compare the screen sizes of the iPhone 4, 5, 6, and so on, you will notice that the screen sizes are always increasing with Apple too. Well, their SE lineup does still offer smaller phones, but you have to settle for the home button. And, in the coming feature, it is possible that the SE line-up might have a bigger screen size. Oh yes, and what about minis? They are replaced by the Plus-size iPhones, which feel gigantic in the pocket.

Take the example of Asus
I loved the Asus Zenfone 9 and 10. They were some of the rarest breeds of compact phones with the highest-end flagship performance and camera systems. But what happened to them? They are replaced with a huge Zenfone 11 Ultra, which is nearly the same as the Asus Rog. Yes, the screen size is just like other Pro Max and Ultras out there.
Yes, compact phones are dead!
If you were a fan of compact phones like me, then you have to be sad because compact phones are dead. Brands are focusing on rolling out huge phones. If it becomes too huge, they will fold them into two phones. But it is not a compact one. Even if you plan to buy the most compact phone in a series like the Samsung S24, you have to pay the flagship price. Forget that you will ever get a smaller phone for less money.
Hopefully, we'll see a compact phone in the near future.
Till then, rest in peace, compact phones!

3 个月Fully resonate with this. The iPhone minis are the last breed of compact phones today. Don’t know what tech giants are thinking by designing phablets instead of phones. In fact real engineering lies where you can pack a lot of stuff in a compact size without compromising on its reliability.
