From Suits to Sweats: How Casual Fridays Became Casual Everyday
Business casual is out, and a new post-Covid dress code is in for many companies. According to recent research by Adzuna, casual attire at work is more favorable for employees, while business wear is declining.?In less than five years, employers citing relaxed dress codes rose to 70%, while those asking for business casual attire dropped to 29% .
A new analysis of 27,000 job postings across the United States by Adzuna over the last few years found that the number of job postings mentioning a casual dress code has risen from 57.5% of postings in 2019 to 69.5% of postings in 2022.?Meanwhile, the percentage of job postings referencing business-relaxed dress codes has fallen from 41% in 2019 to 29.4% in 2022 .
Employers are responding by scrapping outdated traditions.?It’s part of a broader movement toward greater flexibility, including changes in company culture, increased emphasis on work-life balance, and the rise of remote work .
However, experts say employers should tread carefully when changing their dress codes.?Peter Milne, managing director of specialist recruitment firm Robert Walters North America , said dress codes have relaxed over the last decade in particular, with Covid-19 acting as a catalyst to making more casual dress codes the norm .

Employer desires for business casual or casual vary substantially from city to city. In Dallas, about 84% of job postings refer to a simple dress code compared to just 15.6% that mention business casual. In Washington, D.C., that dynamic is flipped, with 70.2% of job ads referencing business casual compared to 29.6% that say a simple dress code.
Changes in how employees are expected to dress are just part of a much larger confluence of events. One of them is the rapid rise of remote and hybrid work, the ongoing tight labor market that has left companies scrambling for workers, and an overall desire by workers for better work-life balance.
The shift from suits to sweats is not just a fashion trend but a reflection of how the pandemic has reshaped our work and life. As more companies embrace casual dress codes, employees can enjoy greater comfort, freedom, and expression in their attire.
However, this also means that workers must be mindful of how they present themselves in different situations and contexts. Whether you are dressing for an interview, a meeting, or a casual day at the office, you should always consider your audience, goals, and personal brand. Remember, your clothes are not just clothes - they are a powerful communication tool influencing your success and happiness at work.

10 个月I think that there are several reasons for this decline: * Disposable Income Declines - The cost of of living has gone through the roof leading to less money to spend on fancy clothes * Global Warming - Hotter temperatures lead people to wear less layers especially in summers and hotter climates. Less layers also mean less costs for washing and dry cleaning. * Flexible Work - Not everyone goes into the office park 5 days as week as they used to pre-pandemic. Many got used to sweat pants while working from home during COVID-19 lockdowns! * Not as many people prefer clothes that have to be dry cleaned or cannot be washed. * Many millennials and Generation Z were raised in the start of a more casual movement that started in the 1990s and continued from there. * Many stores and malls are not carrying as many formal clothes like they did years ago. In some cases to get fancy formal clothes they are special order now. * Many times fancy dresses or tuxedos are needed only today for a small number of special occasions including dances, proms, weddings, gala nights, and some other special events. Some executives still wear them and members of congress but it is usually not the entire office by any means.

1 年Ciao Marchello Arcelay ??♀? In my life I had to wear uniform, casual dress, and business suite. The best for me has been always choose what permit me to feel more comfortable. My slogan can be "Stop look outside, my value resides inside!" We should stop to wear disguises and promote the importance to be accepted as we are. In Italy we say "L'abito non fa il monaco" ??
