The death of 3G

The death of 3G

As technology continues to evolve, it's imperative that we keep up with the latest advancements, lest we get left behind. This isn't just a matter of staying up-to-date with the latest trends; old technology is actually being phased out. For instance, Ofcom reports that there are currently around 5.5 million mobile customers who still rely on 2G or 3G, but these networks are on the verge of being decommissioned. Vodafone plans to shut down its 3G network over the next 12 months, with Three Mobile and EE set to follow suit in 2024.

Upgrading to a newer SIM card isn't enough; we also need to ensure that our devices are compatible with 4G and 5G networks. Those still using 3G devices will soon find that their devices will no longer work or will be downgraded to the slower 2G network, which is being kept as a backup. This means that internet-dependent services will no longer be accessible. Three Mobile customers won't even have the 2G network to rely on; they'll need to upgrade their devices to ensure uninterrupted access to all services. Failure to do so will result in the inability to do anything except make emergency calls.

Although most mobile providers have stopped selling 3G-only devices, some are still available for purchase. This is not the time to take chances. Businesses cannot afford to rely on outdated technology any longer. Additionally, it's important to note that other countries have already started phasing out 2G and 3G networks, so relying on roaming while traveling could leave you in the lurch.

Now is the time to act. No business or individual can afford the downtime of being cut off when 3G is discontinued. It's crucial to future-proof your technology today. With uComms, we can provide you with the right technology at a great deal, and we're committed to staying ahead of the curve to ensure that you're never left behind.
