A small hut to live in, a big yard to play in, a water channel to bathe in, chirping birds to relax to, green hills to admire—and my grandparents to give life a purpose…
As the middle child in the family, I spent my early years with my maternal grandparents at Basvapur, Bodhan, presently in Telangana. My Ammamma loved me dearly, but she also disciplined me, especially when my cousins shared stories of my mischief. At the same time, she always fought for me, making sure I had my place among them.
Whenever we had to travel long distances, she held my hand and walked with me through wide fields, barefoot. I was just 3 or 4 years old, but I can still remember the beauty of the green meadows, the chirping of crickets, and her occasional impatience.
I often accompanied her on her visits to the local gadi, where the Doras and their family lived. She helped them during seasonal work, storing grains and other essentials. While she worked, I roamed around, enjoying their hospitality and the sweet dish they served. I can still smell its aroma and taste its richness even today.
I went to a local school with my cousins, though it was far from my little paradise. I don’t remember much of what I learned there, but I’ll never forget the smell of the upma served during our mid-day meals.

I was scared many times, especially of the drunkards near the school. Even now, I can still picture those moments vividly.
During holidays, my uncles would send us to guard the tomato fields from forest animals. We had so much fun sharing food and playing together in the evenings.
I still feel the warmth of the culture and the love of the simple, innocent people who surrounded me back then. Though I can’t recreate those times, I keep these memories close to my heart and try to relive them through my thoughts!!!
