Dear YouGiveGoods Community,
Issue 5 | February 2024

Dear YouGiveGoods Community,

We don't want to jump the gun but we're officially excited for spring! In addition to longer days, blooming flowers and butterflies, spring also brings new and exciting giving opportunities.

In March we'll celebrate National Reading Month. Sadly, 61% of low-income families have no books in the home. Imagine the joy and pride of a child bringing home a book of her very own. Book drives have the power to make a profound difference in kids' lives.

YOU can make that impact by hosting or donating to a book drive this March. Check out tips for running a book drive here or click below to donate books or host a drive.

DONATE BOOKS! HOST A BOOK DRIVE!

Other spring giving opportunities include:

  • Host a toiletries, food and baby care drive for Women's History Month (March)?
  • Host a healthy food drive for National Nutrition Month (March)Host a giving event for your favorite charity as part of National Volunteer Month (April)
  • Host a book and game drive for National Financial Literacy Month (April)

In addition to helping others this spring, we hope you'll take time for self-care and find some inspiration in the articles below. Let's welcome spring refreshed and ready to go!

Sincere thanks,

The YouGiveGoods Team

In honor of Women's History Month, we're putting the spotlight on Kit Tiernan, a Boston-area social justice activist. In the 1970s Tiernan recognized that Boston-area homeless and needy women were being greatly underserved which prompted her in 1974 to open Rosie's Place, the first women-only shelter in the United States. But, she didn't stop there.? That same year she began providing food to those facing food insecurity out of the back of her station wagon. Her efforts grew to eventually become what is now the Greater Boston Food Bank. Learn more about her work in our Women's History Month blog post.?

A Little Bird Told Me

We are a bit late to the game, but we've gotten on board with the viral "bird test" for relationships. Based on research at The Gottman Institute , the "bird test" is quite simple: you excitedly report something rather mundane (as in, "look at that pretty bird outside") and see how your partner or friend responds. Ideally, he or she will respond with some level of curiosity and interest. No response at all or an obvious blow off is less than ideal. In an age when there's a lot of talk about loneliness, we're using the bird test to help gage which relationships are fulfilling versus which leave us feeling drained or ultimately lonely. We're putting more effort into relationships where we feel heard and valued while trying to let go of others. Learn more in the Huffington Post article and here's hoping your loved ones pass the test!
