Dear Tim....I'm Back

Those of you who have followed the history of my long-term love affair with 苹果 and my era-ending choice in 2020 to move away from Apple and the iPhone to Android will know that I made a big jump.

For context, I owned every iPhone from the first in 2007 until 2020. I was a die-hard Apple Fanboy and would have been the first to admit it. However, entering 2020, I finished with Apple based on the lack of innovation and improvements. Because of this, I made a considerable jump and moved into the Android ecosystem for what I can now refer to as “My Android Experiment” as of today, March 6th 2023, that experiment failed, and I am here to tell you why.?

I write this article looking down at a new sealed iPhone 14 Pro Box and my current handset, the Samsung Galaxy Fold 4, next to it. The Fold has all the promise; it is an innovative folding design that pushed technology forward and should be excellent. However, it just hasn’t been since moving from the S22 Ultra to this device I have constantly felt like I am battling uphill. Every little feature of the OS and the hardware fails to play well together. The lack of integration is never more apparent than when you use the front screen. On this screen, the standard keyboard is too cramped for precise typing, so you swap to the inner screen and face the weird QWERTY-ish layout, which is impossible to use quickly. Then onto other issues, CarPlay doesn’t work well on this device; even though it has 12 GB of RAM, it stalls, crashes and fails to follow the road when using maps.?

?The nail in the coffin for my life with Android came last week. I spent two days out of the office working on the road and faced two issues. First, my battery lasted less than half a day on a 6-month-old device. Secondly, every time I took a call, the phone would only start the audio once I turned on and off the speakerphone. This caused me to play around with my phone rather than take the calls I needed.?

?As of that afternoon, I decided to come to LinkedIn and ask my connections what I should do. Should I grab an iPhone, or should I keep on, and overwhelmingly you said to ditch the Fold and take back up the mantle. With that, I am back unboxing my new iPhone 14 and turning in my Samsung Watch in favour of the Apple Watch Ultra.

?P.S. All I wanted was a phone that worked when I got called and would get me to meetings, but as a lover of Photography, it only made sense to get the best camera so I could sit and take superb selfies outside of my meetings.
