A Rural America Investment Plan with Big Payoffs for Our Smallest Citizens
Last week, I read an editorial by Andrew Yarrow in the Baltimore Sun highlighting Maryland’s lagging support for early childhood development. I responded with a short letter to the editor highlighting how the rural parts of our state are losing out the most from the neglect of Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K) education.
One of the smartest investments we can make to promote growth and development in rural Appalachia — and more broadly across forgotten pockets of rural America — is early childhood development. To make the case for universal, free and quality Pre-K, I’m returning to my hometown of Cumberland, located in Allegany County Maryland — just south of the Mason Dixon line on the Potomac River — to explore how an investment today in our youngest citizens could revitalize our rural community and economy.
