Thank you for taking the time to review my LinkedIn profile; I am pleased you found me and appreciate the opportunity, even if it only leads to a digital handshake and a delightful experience.
A common misconception is businesses hire me as a graphic designer. Businesses hire me to make things easier, find a way to future-proof their brand, and help them communicate.
In the spirit of making things easier, I have compiled a list of the common interview questions I receive and the answers to them. Now, this isn't meant to imply that I know what you're going to ask. If you want to just shoot-the-stuff about art, cycling, running, jiu-jitsu, chess openings, or a great new movie, I'm all ears.
What is your experience?
I have over 20 years of experience in the design and development industry, starting in 2001, after graduating from Sheridan College's 3 Year Illustration program. I continue to work in agency settings as a Creative and Technical Director with teams of up to 50 and as a Freelancer managing hundreds of projects and up to 70 clients at a time.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see myself in the same position I have been in for 20 years. Being the go-to person for everything design, development, marketing, and management related that my clients need. No ego, no wanting to climb over colleagues and up the corporate ladder, just a dependable, honest worker who consistently gets the job done.
Why do you want to work with us?
Clients always bring their challenges to me after struggling with those problems for far longer than they should have. I get a strong sense of satisfaction from having decades of experience needed to solve those problems precisely. I want to embrace your business's challenges and solve them.
What can you bring to the table?
I love bringing order to chaos and being the port in the storm for the businesses that depend on me. In the COVID-era, I've shouldered answering "what do I do?" for many clients and leading the way to new solutions. I'm not only a designer; I'm adept at embracing problems and finding solutions to all of the "what next?"s.
What is your management style?
Since I accepted my first Creative Director position at 24 years old, leading teams, meetings, clients, and projects successfully, I have learned a cardinal rule. I accept full responsibility. I don't pass the buck. I fix it before it's broken. I'm pre-emptive by implementing systems to solve problems that you only learn with decades of experience. When you hire me, you're not simply hiring the technical skill; you're hiring the assurance that the job will succeed. I focus effectively on my tasks so that you can focus on yours.
What is a business challenge you faced, and how did you solve it?
Business success is at the heart of every challenge. That famous "build it, and he will come" line from Field of Dreams makes it all little too fictional. To truly understand my client's needs, I built my own business, Dawg Grillz. As a proof of concept, I created everything from the initial idea to the product and packaging design, tool and die, manufacturing, logistics, organic and paid marketing, to selling the business after appearing on The Dragons' Den TV Show. I found all of the challenges I could and filled all of the gaps in my skill so that when a client asked, "what next?" I could lead the way.
What are your salary expectations?
No one likes the "it depends!" answers, and we both don't want to play the "what's your budget?" / "what's your rate?" game seeing who will flinch first and give up the goods. I'm here to make it easy; if you want me to be the easiest designer and developer you have ever worked with, I charge $50/hour USD ($100,000/year USD). If you want me to run an international team of designers, developers and make client meetings a breeze, I charge $150/hour USD ($300,000/year USD). I am a Canadian, but I have worked with a VISA in the U.S., I understand the process and can take care of the application and acceptance process.
Why do you want to work here when you are a successful freelancer?
My freelance business is booming, and it always will be; I've gone through every disaster, pandemic, and economic calamity the world has seen for the past 2 decades. I have helped my clients succeed in the most difficult circumstances, and when the waters are calm, put the pedal to the metal. I thoroughly enjoy helping my clients solve problems of every scale, and being the rock that the waves crash against, it's important to me to be important, and I want you to depend on me.
What are your strengths?
I'm honestly not that talented; in school, I struggled (although I graduated with good grades) and watched many of the people I looked up to breeze through projects and admired them. There was a job board in our wing of the school; I applied to them all, got some, lost some, but kept moving, putting back the jobs I didn't get for others. A humblebrag is coming... I've always put everything into what I do and have stayed consistent and grown my education and skill over the years to adapt to changes. I've learned to be accurate through ceaseless action and forward motion through challenges. My strength is not in the talent my clients think I have; my strength is in my ability to face huge problems and break them into manageable sizes for my team and I to solve.
What are your weaknesses?
Balance, I think this is a universal weakness. I love art, design, and solving problems so much that I do it for fun and often blur the lines of work and fun. Family, friends, mental, and physical fitness are all as important as my profession. I believe that to be creative; I must have a strong sense of balance. We can be wildly successful without sacrificing everything; I've been proving and refining the "how" for decades and look forward to the next decades with you.
