Dear Perspectives: Should I Stay Or Should I Go?

Dear Perspectives: Should I Stay Or Should I Go?

Welcome to Dear Perspectives. Every other week, I answer some questions about Motherhood, Leadership, and Tech.

Here is today's question:

Should I stay or should I go? When do you know it is time to move on from a particular role or company and when is it time to stick around?

Whenever you're wondering if it's time for a change, answer this one question for yourself:

If today I were offered the job I have—with the same team, manager, role, scope, company, and compensation—would I take it??

  • If the answer to this question is yes, then stay.?
  • If the answer is maybe, then change the things you need to change to make it worth staying.?
  • If the answer is no, then it is likely time to explore something that may be a better fit.?

The longer we are in a role, the easier it is to get stuck in the sunk cost fallacy. Every day we show up, we are saying yes, even if we would not say yes if we were offered this same job again. Take a moment to think about what you love about your role, along with what you don’t. Sometimes a few tweaks can put you back on track, so consider what changes you would need to make to be happy in your current role. If those changes aren't possible, then it's time to give some serious thought to your situation. Don't sacrifice your fulfillment and well-being, even if you've been in your role for a long time. If the answer is that you need to walk away to find happiness, then that's a signal to explore new opportunities.

Have a question you want answered? Leave me a comment. I may answer it here or on my blog. On Monday, I wrote about the Hotshot Rule and how that can change your view of your job/life. Check the article out here.

From my own experience the key question to take a decission is this on: Are these people make me hate a job which I deeply love?

The right time to move out is when you feel you are not getting more opportunities to grow or you have learnt almost everything you possibly could in your organization.

I LOVE this topic because it's so close to me and I decided to GO! Quitting my corporate job was the best thing I did but boy did it take a while and a lot of pain and suffer to decide this! That's why I now help others make the decision and plan it carefully. Here's a specific video on the exact topic: Should you quit your job? https://youtu.be/rzBJJCvECPU
