Dear HR Community
Dear HR Community,
I would like to share some thoughts with you... Before you start to look at my qualification and years of experience, let me say that while I cannot claim to be a fully "baked" HR professional, I know I am a "dough" in the right bakery in the hands of a great chef.
Now back to my thoughts... Over the past couple of weeks, I have had to use LinkedIn more often and I have been horrified. From careless comments to down right discriminatory job posts to insensitive employers, the list seems endless. I will try to address each of the different segments.
Dear Recruiter/Employer: Do not ask your potential employees to click "LIKE" or comment "YES" in order for you to view their profile. I think it shows the laziness and incompetence of your recruitment team. Besides most of your potential candidates are 'passive job seekers' which means they are currently employed... Do you really want their current employer to see that they are about to jump ship? I doubt that is what Human Resources or Recruitment is about. If you hope to employ, let people have an email address to send their cv's/resume's to; or better still get a LinkedIn Recruiter Licence so you can view suitable profiles and the job seekers still get to keep their dignity.
Dear Job Seeker (Passive or Active): Please be discrete with your job search. I know the times may seem difficult but when I (or your employer) see you hit "LIKE" or comment "YES" to every vacancy, I wonder about your work ethic. Some recruiters even ask you to drop your phone number and/or email address in the comment space for the whole world to see and you do... Cyber crime is real. Even without those details, accounts get hacked all the time; don't make it easier.
Dear Random Person on LinkedIn: I am happy for you that you just got a new car, or just had a baby or what ever else you are happy about... Good for you. I doubt LinkedIn is the platform to share it on. There are so many other forums to share your good news on. I will not say much on this because sometimes joy makes you do weird stuff.
Dear LinkedIn: I know you are working on ways to constantly improve your platform. Keep at it, I think you are doing a great job. Kindly make it easier for people to be able to report spam posts.
Yours in LinkedIn
