Dear Golf, Thank You.

Dear Golf, Thank You.

I think we all have a constant force in our lives.

Something that’s been with us through the ups and downs we face during a lifetime.

It could be friends, family, or maybe even a book that’s always in our back pocket.

For me, it’s golf.

The Beginning

When I was 7, golf lured me in when I asked my Mom:

Why does Dad get to miss church in the summer??
He’s playing golf???
Can I get some clubs?

I dove in playing the local par 3 course by my house on a loop for hours and hours and hours...

I had no idea what I was doing, but golf kept reeling me in by giving glimpses I could one day beat my Dad.

That day came when I was 10 and it was a little victory that kept my interest in the game.

When I was 11 he signed me up for a few golf tournaments during the summer and on my second try I won receiving the biggest trophy I’d ever seen in my short life.

I was hooked...

Golf officially had me.

Formative Years

Golf served me well through high school and helped this average student get into a great college.

I stopped playing competitively after my sophomore year to focus on school, but golf remained a part of my life to connect with friends or blow off steam.

My relationship with golf was evolving from a cutthroat competition mindset where every shot is amplified to a more balanced approach.

It wasn’t until September 2001 that I realized golf could also be a form of therapy...

A Shift

In the days following 9/11, my Dad and I played our local municipal course multiple times under a sky with no airplanes.

We talked about life, career, and what things might look like in the near term.

We played with friends old and new, diving into some of the deeper topics of life.

Golf became a safe venue for me to explore my thoughts and life with my mentors, friends and even total strangers.

As my career moved on, golf was there to help me make new business connections, celebrate promotions, ideate new business concepts, and provide comfort when I was unemployed.

It also was a great place to bond with my kiddos... :)

Golf was no longer just a game, but a place I could go to grow, heal, and be present.

My passion for the game hit a new level.

The LinkedIn Golf Guy

A few weeks ago I had this epiphany about golf’s role in my life and felt a deep sense of gratitude.

I also felt an urge to share this gratitude with as many people as possible in a way that was my own to give back to the game I love...

Thus, The LinkedIn Golf Guy was born…

My goal with The LinkedIn Golf Guy is to help businesspeople connect with the game by:

  1. Staying Current on Golf News (Office Cooler Talk)
  2. Sharing Game Improvement Tips (Lower Your Score in the Company Outing)
  3. Highlighting Golf Culture & Lingo (What the Cool Kids are Saying)

I have no idea where The LinkedIn Golf Guy will take me, but I'm confident it's going to be an uplifting ride.

I'd love nothing more than to help YOU increase your enjoyment of the game and make some memories of your own.

Keep it in the fairway,

Roger
