Dear Event Manager...

This has to be said... 

When you try and 'hire' an entertainer for free claiming 'I know that you are giving up your time but it's only a few hours' something else is actually happening.

Please let me explain...

WE ARE ENTERTAINERS.

MCs, dancers, jugglers, singers, magicians, speakers, comedians, producers etc etc etc...

1. We have been learning, honing, improving, adapting and shaping our craft for decades. 
2. We have had massive gigs, intimate gigs, failed gigs, highly paid gigs and cancelled gigs.
3. We have learned valuable lessons from all of them.
4. We learned THE HARD WAY - at the end of a microphone with a live audience that cheered and a client that paid.
5. We also ran the risk of being booed, having the event postpone, not getting paid and becoming sick because we were ill but turned up anyway.

Why? Because we are professionals.

So, the next time you expect us to work 'for free' because you have a limited budget think about this...

- Did the venue give itself for free?

- Is the food donated for free?

- Are the drinks gratis because the hotel had too much alcohol and it was going off?

- Are the hotel staff and management being paid or are they a charity too?

IF the answer to the above is NO then why the hell do you expect US to donate 20-30 (in my cased 40+) years of sharp end experience to your event?

YOU pick up the microphone YOURSELF and see how much our time is worth.

• We DO NOT SELL OUR TIME.
• WE SELL CERTAINTY.
• Your gig WILL work.
• Your clients WILL love you.
• Your guests WILL rave about how cool it was'
• Your sponsors WILL pay you.
• Your next event WILL be even bigger.

That is what we do for you.

So respect us.

Build our fee into your initial budget.

We are flexible. We can work within your profit margins.

Don't insult us with 'it will be good for you to be seen'.

OR, we will pay you next time.

YOU NEVER DO.

You just encourage someone else into doing it for free instead.

Have you heard of social media? - We are already seen!!!

I know times are harder and cash is tighter, but every entertainer you contact has a family, rent, transport and mouths to feed too.

When they don't get paid, they have to take a crappy job doing something they hate and the world loses another talented professional entertainer.

Please respect that.

Or kiss it.

The business world is moving towards needing GAMIFICATION and AUDIENCE/ STAFF ENGAGEMENT as their new marketing currency. NOT qualifications, experience or nepotism.

Entertainers live, breathe and eat audience engagement. To us, it's a martial art.

Maybe you can monetise our time in other creative ways? It comes from a different budget.

Just saying.
