Dear Corporate America: What Millennials Want You To Know

Dear Corporate America,

We're no longer convinced pursuing the corporate road to happiness of extreme stress or long hours is worth it. We want to make the most out of life. You see we don’t work to live anymore, we work to enjoy life and every precious moment in it. It’s time we lay down some ground rules about what we want and need in a career. We, as in the voice of the Millennial generation and the others out there that want to live a fulfilling life.

Ground Rules

  1. We want to live a life with flexibility. We don’t want to spend every waking hour at work nor thinking about it. We want to enjoy our job and the people we work with. We want to work hard but also be rewarded with being able to enjoy the fruits of my labor through additional time away from work to spend time living life the way that we want to.
  2. We want to live a life with freedom of expression. We're sick of living like clones. We want the freedom to express a logical business decision without fear of repercussion for having an opinion. Many of the greatest inventions came from the risks we took by being innovative and not taking the same actions as before. This means not having a standardized work force, hiring people with diverse backgrounds and experience as well as people willing to give a different opinion. It’s time to stop the forced conformity and embrace the value in authenticity.
  3. We want a life of love and acceptance. We're sick of drawing battle lines between co-workers, friends, and other young professionals. We don’t want to compare our lives to others to measure our happiness, we want the freedom to define our own version of happiness. We don’t want to work for a company that is so profit oriented that they forget to acknowledge that we’re human beings. We want to work for a company that wants to serve the public good.

We hope that you are able to see the challenges that we're having in the current Corporate America work environment and are willing to accommodate our requests. We will leave you with one parting quote, “What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it.” We want our work to be worth that full day.

Thank you for your time,

Generation Y & Other Life Lovers across the globe
