Dealing with a New Boss Who Keeps Changing the Game? Here's How to Stay Ahead

Hello Leaders,

Navigating a new role under a supervisor who makes swift, impulsive decisions can be challenging. However, with the right strategies, you can maintain harmony and efficiency in your work environment.

In today’s edition of Navigating Leadership, we explore effective approaches to manage this scenario.

1. Pause and Lead with Empathy

When faced with rapid decisions, it's natural to feel overwhelmed. Before reacting, take a moment to breathe and consider your manager's perspective. New leaders often face immense pressure to deliver immediate results, which can lead to hasty choices.

Example: If your manager abruptly changes project priorities, resist the urge to respond immediately. Instead, acknowledge the pressure they might be under and seek to understand the underlying reasons for the shift. This empathetic approach fosters mutual respect and opens the door for constructive dialogue.

2. Proactively Offer Support ??

Position yourself as a reliable ally by proactively offering assistance. Expressing willingness to support new initiatives demonstrates adaptability and a team-oriented mindset.

Example: When a new procedure is introduced, you might say, "I see the potential benefits of this change. How can I assist in integrating it smoothly with our current processes?"

This approach not only shows your support but also encourages collaborative problem-solving.

3. Cultivate Curiosity Over Judgment ??

Instead of reacting negatively to decisions that seem abrupt or unclear, approach the situation with curiosity. Asking thoughtful questions can provide clarity and may prompt your manager to reflect on their decision-making process.

Example: If a sudden change in direction occurs, consider asking, "Could you share the objectives behind this decision? Understanding your goals will help me align my efforts effectively." This not only clarifies the rationale but also demonstrates your commitment to the team's success.

4. Focus on Controllables

Recognize that not all decisions will align with your preferences. Concentrate on aspects within your control, such as your response and the quality of your work. This mindset reduces stress and enhances productivity.

Example: If a decision impacts your project timeline, adjust your plans accordingly and maintain open communication with your manager about any challenges. This proactive approach ensures you remain effective despite changing circumstances.

5. Seek Support from Peers ??

Leverage the collective experience of your colleagues. Sharing insights and strategies can provide new perspectives and foster a supportive work environment.

Example: If you're navigating multiple changes, discuss with your team how they're adapting. Collaborative discussions can lead to shared solutions and reinforce team cohesion.

Final Thoughts: Embrace Resilience and Growth

Adapting to a new manager's style, especially when it involves impulsive decisions, requires patience and resilience. By leading with empathy, offering proactive support, seeking clarity through curiosity, focusing on what you can control, and engaging with your peers, you can turn these challenges into opportunities for personal and professional growth.
