DEALING WITH NEGATIVE CRITICISM IN THE WORKPLACE

DEALING WITH NEGATIVE CRITICISM IN THE WORKPLACE

Have you ever been faced with negative criticism in the workplace and felt disheartened or defensive? The truth is, You're not alone. We all have faced negative criticisms at different stages of our career and life in general. However, dealing with criticism can be quite challenging, but it's an essential part of professional growth.

Here are a few ways I believe negative criticism could be handled effectively:

When faced with criticism in the workplace or in a public space, you know, it's natural to feel defensive. And sometimes as the case may be, one might be tempted to go ballistic. But It's however necessary to take a "chill pill," relax and listen carefully to what's being said. Often, there are valuable insights hidden within the feedback that can help you improve.

Next, you should consider who is giving the criticism. Is it coming from a trusted colleague, a manager, or someone who might have a different agenda? Understanding the source can help you determine how to weigh and respond to the feedback.

Furthermore, General criticism can be hard to act upon. In this case I'll advise that you ask for specific examples of the behaviour or work that needs improvement. This not only shows your willingness to improve but also helps you understand exactly what needs to change.

Take some time to reflect and think deeply on the feedback. Identify any recurring themes or areas where you can make adjustments. Then, create a plan to address these areas. Setting clear, actionable goals will help you turn negative feedback into positive change.

The goal is to become the best positive version of yourself.

In conclusion, I'll say, don't be afraid to ask for help. Whether it's a mentor, a colleague, or even a training programme, seeking support can provide you with the tools and perspectives needed to grow. Remember, every bit of criticism is an opportunity to learn and enhance your skills and become better.

Feel free to share your thoughts or opinions in the comments section so that we can learn together.

Well said! But as leaders, mentors and fellow colleagues in the work place we have to be careful and mindful of the time , manner and location we criticize others especially if we are looking for positive change from the person and an overall achievement of the team goals. Having a one on one works sometimes and after that the positive outcome their after can be announced to the rest of the team as a form of motivation and encouragement that positive change possible
