May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it's important to recognize the factors that impact employees' mental wellbeing. Gaslighting in the workplace is a form of psychological abuse that can cause employees to question their sanity, memories, or perception of reality. As an HR practitioner, I have seen how gaslighting can negatively affect employees. It can come in the form of jokes made by colleagues or managers dismissing an employee's concerns .Here are a few examples of gaslighting in the workplace:
Denying Reality
A manager tells an employee that they are "too sensitive" or "imagining things" when the employee raises concerns about a co-worker's inappropriate behaviour.
A supervisor dismisses an employee's report of feeling excluded from important meetings, claiming the employee is "overreacting."
Shifting Blame
A team leader constantly criticizes an employee's work, but when the employee tries to explain their reasoning, the team leader says the employee is "making excuses."
A manager berates an employee for missing a deadline, but when the employee points out that they were never given the correct information, the manager accuses the employee of "not taking responsibility."
Minimizing Experiences
A senior executive brushes off an employee's complaints about a hostile work environment, saying "that's just the way things are around here."
A manager tells an employee that their concerns about being passed over for a promotion are "not a big deal" and that the employee should "just focus on their work."
Undermining Confidence
A co-worker constantly questions an employee's competence, repeatedly asking "are you sure you know what you're doing?" in front of others.
A manager consistently makes sarcastic or demeaning comments about an employee's abilities, chipping away at the employee's self-esteem over time.
Altering Memories
A supervisor claims they never agreed to a particular deadline, even though the employee has clear documentation of the conversation.
A co-worker insists that they never made a certain promise or commitment, despite the employee's clear recollection of the event.
Withholding Information
A manager deliberately excludes an employee from important meetings or decisions, then acts surprised when the employee is unaware of the changes.
A team leader fails to provide an employee with the necessary resources or training to complete a task, then criticizes the employee's performance.
