Normally, I'm not this forward.?I usually talk about my coaching and share information about why networking is a great skill, why you need to learn it and how it's going to help you. But I want to talk directly to the digital door knockers, because we are all struggling with them.?I get messages every single week from other great professionals saying, “Wendy, can you please coach people on how to connect effectively in a digital environment”??My reply is “Yes I can, can you tell them that they need me”?
?We are all living in a digital space.?We have social media accounts and we have professional networking sites that we use on a regular basis. Yet, not a day goes by that I don't get a knock on my LinkedIn profile. Somebody sends me a connection request, I open the door to see who's there and that person immediately runs in and ends up on my couch.
?That might seem like an extreme reaction, but that's exactly how it feels to professionals who use LinkedIn as a networking tool.?They use LinkedIn to build their professional value, as a tool to find their next customer. ??
When you knocked on my door, sent me a connection request and I opened it, you immediately sat on my couch and then got upset when I wanted to know what you're doing here. That's what it feels like to us when you immediately send a connection request, that includes a sales pitch.?Oh my goodness, you need to stop doing that. There are a lot of reasons why you're damaging your reputation. Maybe you are the solution to the problem I have, but you don't know me. You can still sell in that environment, you can still be an effective professional in that environment, but it is different than door knocking.?
?It is different from being a telemarketer. You need to add a couple extra steps, because you are not supposed to immediately sit down on my couch. I cannot tell you personally how many times I am irritated by a message that says here's a link to my calendar, let’s talk about how I can help you fill in the blank.?
